Mission Statement
The “Cover Your K-9” Fund is a project of the Police & Working K-9 Foundation, a non-profit all volunteer organization working to keep California law enforcement K-9 teams ‘covered’ with safety equipment and emergency medical care. “Cover Your K-9” provides K-9 bullet-proof vests, heat alarms for patrol cars & has worked with veterinary specialists to design a K-9 Emergency Medical Course & custom K-9 Trauma Kit; this program is serving as a model for K-9 emergency care training across the country. A special Retired K9 Emergency Care Fund is also maintained for emergency medical care for those retired police K9s with no safety net.
About This Cause
The Police and Working K-9 Foundation “Cover Your K-9” program provides essential safety equipment & training for law enforcement K-9 teams in Northern California. Many agencies have been hurt by the budget cuts of recent years and have barely been able to keep the funding to retain their K-9 units. We provide additional safety equipment and training to help keep these hard-working teams protected while they are out protecting their communities. Custom Cover Your K-9 Bullet-proof Vests, K-9 Heat Alarm Systems for K-9 vehicles, our Cover Your K-9 Emergency Medicine Course and K-9 Trauma Kit are some of the safety equipment & training that we provide. Our organization is staffed by volunteers with a wide variety of professional experience and expertise. We are proud to announce that we have worked with K-9 handlers in our state to develop a new style of bullet-proof vest that provides new high tech features and the highest ballistic protection available (Level IIIA ballistic panels). The new Cover Your K-9 vest is custom-fit to each K-9 and is made here in California. It has several specialized features such as an IR/LED beacon on top and a molle system that allows the handler to attach additional equipment such as cameras & other safety gear. These features are normally found on very K9 expensive vests that cost $2400 or more. As we have been a part of the development of the vest, we are able to obtain these very high quality vests at wholesale for $1400. We allow agencies to choose the K9 vest that best suits their needs and do provide other ballistic vest brands as requested by the individual agencies (up to $1400 as per our current K9 vest distribution policy). We have been able to provide hundreds of these new Cover Your K-9 bullet-proof vests to protect K-9 teams in California. Our Cover Your K-9 Emergency Medicine courses have been attended by more than 1650 law enforcement K-9 handlers & Search & Rescue handlers from local, CA State and federal agencies and received excellent reviews. We offer instruction from the highest level of veterinary medical specialists who have decades of successful experience in the medical and emergency care & management of working K-9s and our course was featured in the Spring 2016 issue of BARK magazine. Many California active duty K-9 handlers and members of their command staff have attended & gained valuable information on keeping their police dogs healthy & safe. Topics in the course include preventive care & maintenance of the working dog as well as emergency care, drug and poison exposure, trauma management and other essential life-saving K-9 first aid information and procedures. There is a hands-on portion where handlers learn CPR & emergency oxygen management for canines as well as splinting, bandaging & wound management for canine trauma care. At the completion of the course a custom K-9 Trauma Kit is provided at no charge to K9 handlers. The custom Cover Your K9 Trauma Kit includes $300 worth supplies for canine emergency response that are above and beyond those provided in the basic commercially available canine first aid kits. In the coming year we will be redesigning our kit to be more modular to meet the needs of the many types of deployments that K9 teams are involved with. This year we introduced a new, more advanced K-9 Tactical Emergency Care Course and we have hosted 5 of these scenario-based courses for 185 handlers in Northern California and 130 handlers in Southern California. This program teaches handlers skills for what to do in the event of a life-threatening injury in the field has already saved the lives of several police dogs. One of them was K-9 Peydro and his story is here: http://www.kcra.com/news/woodland-police-k9-recovers-after-being-hit-by-car/40733164 We have a K9 Vehicle Heat Alarm program to help keep our loyal K-9s safe while they are on the job. More K-9s die nationally from heat exhaustion than any other single cause and we hope to raise awareness with both the public and law enforcement agencies about this danger to our working K9s. These Heat Alarm systems with the new Ace WatchDog system which includes an app to alert the officer in case their patrol car should overheat or become too warm. Each year we set aside $10,000 to assist our loyal retired K-9s who have served us so well with $1,000 toward emergency care. For those agencies without a K9 association, the officers who have adopted their dog after retirement have no safety net. We seek to assist them with help for the first $1,000 in costs to honor the service that these dogs have given to our communities. We take donations directly from individuals and community groups on our web site and during our special event each year with Pet Food Express. We hope that you will consider supporting our brave K-9 heroes to help keep them safe!
