Mission Statement
founded in 2010 CRS assists legally resettled refugees who are US permanent residents and citizens to navigate and understand American cultural and social institutions to maximize independence and self-reliance.
About This Cause
CRS is an independent 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to facilitate the successful community integration of legally resettled refugees in San Antonio, TX, with an emphasis on educational support, health and wellness, and employment. CRS provides a wide range of free social support services to adults and children including English instruction, maternity support, tutoring for all students, cultural instruction, college scholarships, U.S Citizenship instruction, and mental health counseling. The agency is operated primarily by 25 volunteers & 4 paid staff who assist appx. 120 clients per week. CRS is the only refugee social support center in San Antonio that focuses exclusively on social support for new (legally) resettled neighbors regardless of date of arrival. All clients are legal U.S. residents and new citizens that have fled war, severe oppression and genocide. San Antonio resettled 1,881 new arrivals in FY 2016 who originated from over 20 countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Burma, D.R. Congo, Bhutan (via Nepal), In total, over 10,000 refugees have arrived in San Antonio since 2008. Our capacity to reach out and assist all new arrivals is limited by financial capability. Our goal is to create a welcoming environment throughout the city where new neighbors can feel safe and encouraged to integrate into our society. CRS is supported by private individuals and donations from community groups as well as grants from various foundations. Since the fall of Afghanistan in August 2021 and the closure of the US embassy in Kabul, the US has admitted over 70,000 Humanitarian Parolees. All are vetted in US military bases before being resettled into communities around the country. San Antonio is ta top destination city in Texas for newly arriving Afghans. Between September 2021-August 2022 our agency has helped over 3,258 Humanitarian Parolees with emergency assistance of bedding, hygiene kits, gift cards for food, and other and basic necessities. Your donations enable us to keep up with the demand from our newest neighbors until they can enter the workforce and move toward self-sufficiency. Remember, these very resilient and dedicated Afghans helped our US military and coalition forces in some capacity, including interpretation, translation, truck drivers, food service worker, security personnel, etc. Their lives have been in grave danger from the Taliban and leaving Afghanistan with their families was their only safe option.
