Mission Statement

The Hope Foundation is a registered charity working with street connected children and slum dwelling communities in Kolkata (formally Calcutta), India. We work to free children and poor families from lives of pain, abuse, poverty and darkness. Living on the streets, children are exposed to horrendous physical and sexual abuse. Those who survive are left to fend for themselves, with no promise of a safe future. They are forced to work from as young as five years of age to earn money for food and so cannot go to school. HOPE works to free them from child labor. HOPE funds and operates over 60 projects in Kolkata. HOPEs vision is of a world where it should never hurt to be a child

About This Cause

The Hope Foundation (HOPE) is a charity (founded in Ireland and with offices in Ireland, USA, UK and India), working to provide sustainable and holistic pathways out of poverty, and advocate for the rights of, and equality for, the most vulnerable street connected children and slum dwelling communities in Kolkata in India. HOPE was founded in 1999 and twenty-four years on, HOPE today implements in excess of 55 critical humanitarian programs throughout the streets and slums of Kolkata. HOPE implements these vital programs across sectors including child protection, education, healthcare, vocational training, capacity building and emergency response for vulnerable street connected children and slum dwelling communities. The children and communities with whom HOPE works, are some of the most vulnerable and most disadvantaged in the world, and since 1999, we have impacted positively on the lives of more than 3 million street connected and slum dwelling communities in Kolkata. Those who live on the on the streets and in the slums are rendered as voiceless and invisible, because they are living in temporary and undocumented circumstances - in the most desperate of circumstances without access to the most basics of sanitation, shelter, protection, nutrition, education, and healthcare… but there is HOPE. All of HOPE’s activities are implemented by a professional team of more than 450 national staff members in Kolkata, who work with sustained professionalism, passion, and commitment. HOPE’s vision is of a world where it should never hurt to be a child. Under our Education Programmes, HOPE operates four crèches for slum children and five “Nabo Asha” education programmes for street connected children and the Holistic Education Programme which works with government schools in Kolkata. HOPE’s Holistic Education has made a powerful impact on the learning environment, school enrolment and inclusive education for children in school. HOPE works closely with the teachers and provides capacity building programmes on activity-based learning and creating a child-friendly learning environment. HOPE works with Government Schools and provides therapy to children in 14 Government Resource Rooms. From 1999 to 2020, over 77,000 children were supported under our education programmes. HOPE also provides education support for children with special needs across 3 programme locations and provides a mobile education facility via our Education on Wheels programme within the most underprivileged slum districts of Kolkata. The HOPE Hospital, Blindness Eradication Programme, Early Childhood Care and Education programme, Night Round Mobile Medical Unit and Emergency Response Unit, all operate under our Healthcare Programmes. HOPE operates 10 Residential Child Care Centres and a Child Watch programme under our protection programmes. To support income generation and vocational training programmes, HOPE established the Lifeskills Vocational Training Centre which provides courses for disadvantaged individuals in order to provide them with the skills for sustainable livelihoods. HOPE hospital established in 2008, provides medical treatment to underprivileged people living below the poverty line, who otherwise would be deprived of necessary medical treatment. HOPE hospital is highly respected for its specialised eye care treatment clinics and the provision of a very critical Night round Mobile Medical services which provides medical diagnosis and treatment of the most vulnerable street and slum dwellers. HOPE also implements a mobile dentistry programme which also caters to the dental health and hygiene needs of the street connected population who otherwise have no access to dental services.
