Mission Statement
As Durham, NC’s oldest and largest long-term shelter, the Durham Rescue Mission currently serves 400 men, women and children a day, 365 days a year throughout the Triangle by providing safe shelter, addiction recovery programs and much more.
About This Cause
Our Mission is to meet through the power of Jesus Christ the needs of the whole person: spiritual, educational, emotional, physical, social and vocational, so that those who are hurting may become fully functioning members of society. Since 1974, we have been working with addicted and homeless men and women in the Triangle. We have found one of the best ways to help someone move from homelessness to a functioning member of society is through education. However, a recent study shows 31% of the men and women at the Durham Rescue Mission were high school drop outs. Working with Durham Technical Community College, we are able to provide men and women the opportunity to obtain their NC GED certificate on our campuses in our newly renovated computer classrooms. In addition, with the GlaxoSmithKline Education Endowment, residents are able to pursue higher education at local universities and vocational training at trade schools. So you can see that not only does our nonprofit organization provide basic necessities to the homeless and addicted of the Triangle, such as food, shelter and clothing — we also offer them a deeper, more fulfilling life through Biblical counseling, educational programs, vocational training, continued accountability and countless other programs and services. We’ve found that most of our residents come to us at a point of true desperation, with nowhere else to turn. Many of them have sought every possible solution to their problem of homelessness or addiction — except God. We believe that holistic restoration can only come through an authentic desire to change rooted in an understanding of what Jesus Christ has already done for each and every one of us through the Gospel. Over the past 40 years, the Durham Rescue Mission has seen thousands of shattered lives mended through our ministry and the transformational power of Christ.
