Mission Statement

OUR CHILDREN’S TRUST is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public interest law firm providing strategic, science-based legal services to youth from diverse backgrounds to secure the enforceable legal right to a safe climate.

About This Cause

OUR CHILDREN’S TRUST's legal work – guided by constitutional, public trust, human rights laws and the laws of nature – aims to ensure systemic and science-based climate recovery planning and remedies at federal, state, and global levels. We seek judicial orders mandating country and statewide science-based Climate Recovery Plans that will return atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations to below 350 parts per million (ppm) by the year 2100. Collectively, our work around the globe is known as "Youth v. Gov": young people, suing governments, for science-based constitutional climate mitigation planning. Legal Action: In May 2011, we coordinated and supported youth who filed official actions with state officials in all 50 states and against the federal government requesting that science-based carbon emission reductions and climate recovery plans be implemented. In some states, those actions were brought before state administrative agencies, and in other states, those actions were brought in state courts. These youth-led actions have advanced through and to a variety of stages including a recently filed Petition for Writ of Certiorari to the United States Supreme Court. Additionally, we support youth engaging with their local community governments to take local climate action and commit local governments to science-based emission reduction plans. We piloted this effort in 2013-14 in Eugene, OR, where youth initiated, advocated, and negotiated the successful passage by the Eugene City Council of the first science-based climate recovery ordinance in the nation. Public Education: We strive to educate the public about the urgent need to reverse the increasing concentrations of CO2 in our atmosphere and the resulting destabilization of our climate systems. We have co-produced with WITNESS an award-winning series of short films documenting the stories of youth facing environmental degradation and the actions they are taking to address those conditions. http://ourchildrenstrust.org/trust-films.
