About This Cause

Bridge City Paddling Club is a non-profit dragon boat and outrigger canoe club in Portland, Oregon. We were formed in January, 2010. We are a year round competitive club. We sponsor the annual Dawn to Dusk paddle each year and have raised over $300,000 for the Children's Cancer Association over the past ten years.. We have also raised over $90,000 for Special Olympics during the annual plunge event in February . All expenses associated with the fund raising are paid for by the club - which allows all proceeds to go directly to these organizations. The club currently has over 50 members and sponsors a women's dragon boat team, a men's dragon boat team, and an outrigger team. These teams compete in four to six dragon boat races each year in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and California. We also compete in six to ten outrigger races in Oregon and Washington including both distance and sprint events. Our competitive results are posted on the web site. We race as a club in these events as "Many Boats, One Team". Teams practice 2 to 3 times per week all year except for breaks at the end of the paddling and calendar year. Members range in age from 14 to 67. We are a member of Dragon Sports in Portland and rent our boats from this non-profit. We are also a member of the Pacific Dragon Boat Association, which is an affiliate of the United States Dragon Boat Federation. We are also a member of the PNW-ORCA, the Pacific Northwest Outrigger Racing Canoe Association. Our women's dragon boat team placed second in the United States Club Crew event in Colorado Springs in August, 2019, and would have gone to France in 2020 to represent the United States but the event was cancelled due to COVID-19. All coaches, staff, and board members are volunteers. Our mission statement of competitive paddling and competitive philantrophy could be summarized as "Kick Ass. Save the planet". We were awarded the 2013 Rio Tinto Alcan Sustainability Award for our community service activities.
