About This Cause
1.1 Background of Zafia’s Family House Zafia Christina Fyfe--January 19, 1992 – July 1, 2006 Zafia’s Family House began as a wish our daughter Zafia had while battling cancer. She saw the need for a house where families could stay while their critically ill child was hospitalized nearby. Our goal, as Zafia’s parents, is to fulfill this wish of our daughter. Zafia’s Story: Zafia Christina Fyfe was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Republic of Russia on January 19, 1992. We adopted her from an orphanage in Uzbekistan at the age of three. She had lived in the orphanage since she was an infant. We fell in love with Zafia the first time we saw her. She was a petite little girl, with exotic hazel eyes, and a captivating smile that immediately warmed our hearts. We were so excited to be bringing our daughter home to America. Zafia continued to thrive socially and academically. She even had some long-term goals in place. She wanted to go to college to become a pediatrician. She had a heart to serve and help others, especially children. She attended Lake Forest Elementary School in 2003 and graduated in 2006 from Marina Village Middle School in El Dorado Hills. However, in 2004, when Zafia was just 12 years old, she began to complain about pain and swelling in her right knee. After various exams, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone) cancer. During treatment, Zafia always had a smile to share and maintained a positive attitude. She was determined to win the battle with her cancer and she fought hard. Through the battle, Zafia’s best friend Kassi, was at her bedside. Zafia’s strong faith and hope and the support from Kassi helped Zafia endure the many surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Zafia continued to “fight the good fight.” She never gave up hope. She remained strong and positive, no matter where the journey took her. Through all of the ups and downs of treatment, she was able to draw upon the inner strength that encouraged others, especially other cancer patients. She was an inspiration -- to family, friends, and strangers alike. She touched the hearts of so many people! Even though she was fighting for her life, she never stopped showing her concern and love for others. For two years, Zafia courageously fought her battle with cancer before peacefully entering into rest. It was a difficult time, and there are no words to describe our loss, but we are determined to carry on Zafia’s final wish. While Zafia’s time with us may have been short, her legacy, her wish to help and serve others, lives on. And this is where the story of Zafia’s Family House begins….
