Mission Statement
The story of Tyler's death became a global news story, highlighting the impact and consequences of bullying while sparking dialogue among parents, teachers, and students across the country. Moreover, the story linked to broader issues impacting youth and families such as LGBT inequality, safety in schools, youth in crisis, higher education support systems, and cyber-bullying. In 2010, Tyler's death was one of many suicides among LGBT youth reflecting a growing and desperate need to focus on the issue of bullying in schools and its victims. Among vulnerable youth, the LGBT populations are known to be the most vulnerable. Studies cite LGBT youth are three to seven times more likely to attempt suicide than other youth. More studies have also shown that the greatest determinant of LGBT suicide is a hostile social environment, be it home, school or work. The Tyler Clementi Foundation was born out of the urgent need to address the needs of vulnerable populations.
About This Cause
The Tyler Clementi Foundation works to end online and offline bullying in schools, workplaces and faith communities. Our theory of change is that progress can be made through education, advocacy and research. Our mixture of programs are designed to fill gaps in the anti-bullying sector. We work hard not to duplicate other programs. Our programs focus on prevention and larger systemic change. Using the power of story and personal tragedy, the Clementi family speaks around the country to move people to action. The series helps TCF engage the public and the media to bring more people into this movement. To request a speaker contact outreach@tylerclementi.org. We must prevent bullying before it begins. Imagine if on the first day of school, work or on a new sports team, a person in authority stood up and verbally told everyone that any form of bullying, harassment or humiliation would not be tolerated? The #Day1 Campaign is an effective, immediate and free way to reduce bullying, harassment and humiliation. It requires four main elements: 1) A person in authority, 2) clearly saying what behavior is expected and what behavior is not tolerated, 3) early in the tenure of new students/employees/athletes, and 4) receiving a verbal confirmation from the audience that they understand. #Day1 focuses schools, universities, workplaces, athletic programs, faith communities and other group environments on a targeted intervention during orientation. #Day1 clearly states that some forms of “socially acceptable” teasing or cruelty are unacceptable!
