Mission Statement

Jamii Health International helps local communities in the developing world create and maintain their own health care systems, making them independent of charity, putting them in charge of their own destiny, and returning their dignity.

About This Cause

Jamii Health International, also known as JHI, is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity dedicated to the development of self-sustaining health care in the developing world. JHI was founded by Dr. Alan Spira, a specialist in tropical medicine and global health. Through decades of volunteering his medical skills in the developing world, Dr. Spira has observed several critical issues which were not being properly addressed: -Projects often fail because of a lack of ongoing financial support as well as waning interest; -Communities struggle to control their destinies when dependent upon foreign charity; -Disease prevention is the key to healthy societies as much as disease control. Jamii’s Purpose. The name Jamii means community in Swahili. JHI focuses on just that: communities. JHI’s approach is to develop locally-feasible income streams allowing each community to be invested in, and manage the health care center, along with its own health and well-being. In order to ensure communities do not have to continue to rely on financial support from charitable organizations, Dr. Spira has developed a 10 year plan, divided into three stages, to create self-sustaining health care centers in partnership with selected communities. This plan is a combined medical and economic model for all communities that have health care issues and want to become self-reliant. Throughout the 10 year plan, each community becomes more sophisticated and in control of the project. At the end, JHI transfers project, which has had enough time to mature, to the local community. JHI sees three equally vital elements in achieving healthy communities: medical care, preventive medicine, and education. We strive to accomplish the three at the same time. JHI relies upon charitable donations for initiating these projects, which cover the bulk of the initial costs, including building the system, training staff and acquiring equipment. Each project site becomes less dependent upon funding as training and time progress. In the long run, donors save money. We also rely upon volunteers. Upon completing a screening process, volunteers travel to a JHI project site and spend a month providing health care, health prevention and education. Volunteers work with local physicians, nurses, dentists and medical assistants, both helping them and learning from them. They will serve as medical ambassadors, facilitating an exchange of knowledge and understanding. Jamii’s First Project. Because Africa suffers more than other continents from inadequate health care, Africa is the natural focus for JHI. The first JHI project is based in Sefwi Wiawso, Ghana. It will serve as the model for projects in other regions throughout Africa. Based on the 10 year plan developed by Dr. Spira, this community will be self-reliant on it medical needs within 10 years after the project is up and running. Your Assistance. JHI needs your assistance to realize its dream of making Sefwi Wiawso, Ghana, the first community in Ghana to be medically self-sustaining. JHI is a 501(c)3 organization, and donations are tax-deductible. We would greatly appreciate your making a tax deductible donation to JHI, either by going to http://jamiihealth.org/pages/contributing and charging your donation to a credit card, or by sending a check to JHI at the address shown below. Thank you for your support.
