Mission Statement

Rebecca’s Tent is dedicated to enabling homeless women to obtain stable housing on a sustainable basis by providing shelter, empowerment tools, and community support.

About This Cause

Rebecca’s Tent exists to enable homeless women to obtain stable housing on a sustainable basis by providing shelter, employment tools and community support during the coldest months of the year in Atlanta. Chartered by Congregation Shearith Israel in 1983 as the Shearith Israel Shelter, Rebecca’s Tent (renamed in 2015 to broaden our constituent base) offers services free-of-charge to homeless women, eighteen years of age or older, in DeKalb County and City of Atlanta, regardless of religious background. Rebecca’s Tent provides 6 months of shelter, outreach case management, and 24 months of follow-up case management services to single women who are homeless in Atlanta regardless of race, religion, age, family status, national origin or sexual orientation. The Shelter will serve unaccompanied women including those who have mental disabilities, addiction histories and criminal records. In addition to providing shelter services including three nutritional meals daily, Rebecca’s Tent assists homeless women with an employment training program and transitional housing services. These services work together cogently; women who stay at the shelter are required to attend weekly case management meetings and to seek employment (with assistance provided by staff). In addition to thirteen beds, the facilities offer access to a computer lab, telephone, kitchen, laundry facilities, showers and a living room. Shelter residents are also provided with MARTA passes that enable them to attend job interviews, appointments and other obligations. Residents are also encouraged to take advantage of weekly Life Management Skills and Empowerment Activities led by community volunteers, featuring tools to help clients overcome obstacles to employment and independence. Services offered with these programs include Counseling, Case Management, Training, Empowerment Workshops, Resume/Computer Coaching, Conflict Resolution and Job Training. These services are designed to offer a holistic approach to helping participants transition out of homelessness and into sustainable employment and housing.
