Mission Statement

We are a group of passionate engineers that develop cleaner, sustainable, fuel efficient, and affordable household cookstoves that fit needs and the culture of the people who are using them. Over 2.6 billion people worldwide still cook on open fires or primitive stoves. Improved cookstoves both help with indoor air pollution as well as reducing the fuel necessary to cook and heat homes which ultimately has an affect on the deforestation of the regions in which cookstoves are utilized. We believe that people everywhere, even those born in the world's poorest places deserve an opportunity to reach their full potential.

About This Cause

We are a nonprofit located on Vashon Island focused on the research and development of improved cookstoves. The simple act of cooking on an efficient cookstove dramatically improves lives for households in developing countries. The time saved from less fuel collection trips alone affords more opportunity for education, work and time with family. As this primarily affects women and children, this has a drastic effect on gender equality in these communities. We believe women everywhere should not have to jeopardize their health by cooking food. Household air pollution is responsible for 4.3 million premature deaths and the majority of those are women and children. We partner with local manufacturers and implementors throughout the cookstove development process. This process includes user research, applied research, design, prototyping, testing and field studies. The result of working with local manufacturers to design the tooling necessary for production of our cookstoves creates local jobs in developing communities. Our cookstoves are on the leading edge of affordable appropriate technology.
