Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide access to brighter futures for youth around the world by strengthening the field of mental health using revolutionary sport-based therapy and clinical-based initiatives.

About This Cause

Doc Wayne is an award-winning non-profit that has pioneered the leading approach of sport-based therapy and catalyzed a mental health movement. We provide training, tools, and services that address emotional, behavioral, traumatic, racial, gender, and cultural-based barriers by providing equitable access to better mental health for all. Our clinician-led curricula puts sport into practice, strengthening social-emotional skills in young learners to build healthier, more resilient global communities. Our primary constituents for direct services are young people aged 5-18 in the Greater Boston Waltham, and MetroWest neighborhoods in Massachusetts. We currently work directly in over 20 schools, community centers, and residential centers with whom we partner with closely and provide mental health support for their youth. We are going to continue to utilize our MA based market as our “lab” for continuous quality improvement (CQI) of our programming and curriculum, as well as continue to strengthen our internship program, which could yield trained staff with the appropriate resources in place. This is an important market for us to allow our team to continue to hone our skills, improve our work while also testing new ideas and ways to engage youth. Doc Wayne will continue to provide its services to over 550 youth in Massachusetts who live with documented disabilities and are survivors of complex trauma. We will expand the reach of this service over the next three years, increasing the quality and range of what we provide. This will play a vital role in reaching our target of one million. Our Program Descriptions: Tele-health: Doc Wayne offers telehealth to ensure that access to high-quality mental health services is available to those in need. Conducted through secure remote platforms online, Doc Wayne clinicians provide individual, group, family therapy, and Therapeutic Mentoring. This service is not only available to youth but to any individual requesting support. Therapeutic Mentoring: We believe that a 1-on-1 approach to mental health can change the world. Doc Wayne’s Therapeutic Mentoring program pairs mentees with coaches for structured, strength-based support services, conducted both in-person and remotely. This service is a Children's Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI) and requires youth to be part of a HUB to qualify. A “hub” service is the CBHI provider who takes the lead on coordinating care for youth with multiple service providers involved in their treatment. As is the case with all of our programs, Therapeutic Mentoring has roots in trauma-informed care. Our coaches lead sessions designed to support individuals as they process and persevere through adversity in a safe, compassionate space. Over time, mentees build trust, learn to heal, grow, and connect to themselves and their community. Clients requesting this service from Doc Wayne must be within our assigned geographical area set by the State. Chalk Talk®: Doc Wayne’s sport-based group therapy program, engages youth by harnessing the power of sport. Our coaches use soccer, basketball, flag football, and other team sports to support students as they process and persevere through adversity. As students progress through Chalk Talk®, they will: - Have the opportunity and needed support to develop as resilient and regulated individuals with positive adult and peer relationships - Create positive relationships with teammates, friends, and family members - Become confident and competent members of their schools and larger communities - Achieve their highest level of academic success The Champions Network™: Doc Wayne's external training program. We partner with a range of organizations, clinicians, sports coaches, and other youth development professionals, sharing how to include trauma-informed, sport-based, mental health support in their work with young people. Doc Wayne created The Champions Network™ with the vision of making sport-based mental health services accessible to youth across the globe, while empowering organizations, clinicians, sports coaches, teachers, and other youth development professionals to utilize sports in a therapeutic manner. The Champions Network™ features remote training and live sessions which aim to develop awareness around youth mental health, equip more professionals with the tools to support youth through sport-based initiatives, and reimagine mental health through the lens of sport. The need for Doc Wayne’s unique form of intervention in youth mental health has never been as apparent as it is today. Over 100,000 children in the United States lost a parent due to COVID-19. Boston Children’s Hospital reported a 40% increase in youths having suicidal thoughts or attempting suicide from July through October of 2021. As youth and families return to school in-person, addressing these lingering mental health needs will inevitably fall onto the shoulders of teachers and school staff. For these reasons, we want to be sure to increase our availability as much as possible so we can assist our school partners and the youth they serve as they begin to transition back into the school space and process the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown, and resulting trauma. Our approach breaks down barriers, reduces stigma, and alters the perception of what a clinician is by calling them “coach.” Most importantly, we get kids to show up—and sport is the vehicle that helps them connect.
