Mission Statement

Greater DC Diaper Bank’s mission is to support vulnerable families in our region by collaborating with partners to distribute essential baby and hygiene products and expand access to critical services.

About This Cause

Greater DC Diaper Bank (GDCDB) secures, stocks, and supplies a reliable source of diapers and baby care items that economically vulnerable families need. In 2010 we started working with a handful of social service agencies and our partner network now extends throughout the greater DC area, including 75 organizations spread throughout the region (Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, all eight wards in DC, and Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William counties as well as in Alexandria in Northern Virginia). Through our partners we distribute 11 million diapers and serve 32,000 families and 40,000 babies annually—but the need remains ever-present, and is growing. Our community partners distribute GDCDB products efficiently and to the families most in need, and they use these products to evoke change and increase participation in their own programs, all of which ease the burden of poverty in critical ways. We strategically select agencies with proven impact that can incorporate GDCDB product distributions into their programs. The social workers at GDCDB’s Community Partners view GDCDB diapers as a “gateway resource” and leverage them in a range of ways, including attracting new and retaining existing clients, as incentives to attend classes and programs, and as resources at transitional housing facilities. In addition to our product distribution program, GDCDB raises community awareness of the needs of our region's most vulnerable children. Over 1,000 community members volunteer at our warehouse each year and through our innovative Ambassador program 175 volunteers open up their homes and businesses as designated drop-off locations around the region, making it easy for families to donate and allowing Ambassadors to serve as our voice in their neighborhoods. Finally, we leverage our technical expertise in diaper need to advocate for low-income families in local and national press and among regional policy-makers. In collaboration with our partner network, GDCDB executes the following programs: Diaper Collection and Distribution: GDCDB leverages our extensive network to secure diapers from multiple sources: in-kind donations from families and corporations and discounted purchases from wholesalers. We stock and bundle these diapers in our Maryland warehouse, distributing over 850,000 diapers each month. The Baby Pantry: GDCDB stocks formula, wipes, baby food, and often-overlooked hygiene and personal care products for babies and adults, distributing $500,000 worth of items annually. The Nursery Project: Launched in October 2017, we work through existing donation channels to collect new and gently used gear for safe sleep, safe travel, and safe play, and then distribute to our partners. This program distributes approximately 60 bundles valued at $850 each every month. The Monthly: Like diapers, period products are necessary, expensive, not covered by public assistance, and rarely provided by social service agencies in a systematic manner. Since the program’s start in November 2016, we have distributed over 1.5 million period products through our partners. Our distribution model is flexible, scalable, and responsive to community needs, allowing us to efficiently move into new product areas and alleviate poverty by supporting families in critical ways. These products, coupled with the additional support families receive from our community partners, provide economically vulnerable families in our region with the tools they need to raise happy, healthy members of the next generation.
