Mission Statement

Animal Welfare. Worldwide.

About This Cause

For more than two decades, FOUR PAWS has consistently and successfully focused on one goal: to help animals who have been abused for entertainment, economic, scientific or other reasons. We view ourselves as the advocate and champion of those who have no voice of their own, namely animals. The common foundation for this is the respect for all forms of life and the deep conviction that every organism has a right to be treated with consideration and to live a life with dignity that complies with its needs. Animals are sentient creatures and therefore subjectively perceive the world; we as humans bear responsibility for them. For us, the goals of animal protection, human safety and nature conservation are inseparably linked. We therefore feel a solidarity with all those who use peaceful and legal means to achieve a respectful coexistence with one another and with the environment. We as an animal protection organization seek to contribute our share to achieving this goal. Our Advocacy Work The aim of our advocacy work is to achieve long-term, legally binding improvements for factory farm animals, laboratory and companion animals and wildlife. One of our focuses is on factory farm animal welfare improvements; the concrete solutions we offer here clearly demonstrate the economic benefits and appropriateness of our approach. We have also committed ourselves to ending animal experiments and replacing them with modern, more effective and scientifically recognized test methods. Finally, we also seek to prohibit fur farming and to ban the ownership of wild animals by private individuals. Our Projects The foremost concern of our national and international aid projects is to provide rapid and direct help for animals in distress. If the need arises, we provide an appropriate habitat for the animals. In order to prevent animal suffering from the onset, we are also devoted to achieving long-term improvements at the legislative level. The FOUR PAWS Approach The most effective way to protect animals over the long-term is to change the law. We attempt to achieve this through campaigns and advocacy at the national and international levels, and appealing to the general public. Fundamental changes require a broad social consensus. Our strategy is to notify and educate the public in order to change society's perception of this issue. Our work is founded on exhaustive background research. We operate on a sound scientific foundation and cooperate closely with experts in the fields of medicine, agriculture, biology and law. We draw attention to abuses and point out their economic, political and social roots. Together with partners from businesses, science and research, we develop constructive solutions and implement these as practical models for future developments in the animal protection sector. We set specific goals and attempt to achieve them with strategic public relations efforts and lobbying. We are internationally active and currently have offices in the United States, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Our work is not bound by any geographic limits. FOUR PAWS is politically independent. Funding FOUR PAWS International is a US 501 (c) 3 organization, registered in good standing in Massachusetts. The organization works out of our Boston office and has attained a Bronze Participant level on GuideStar.org and are profiled on GreatNonprofits.org. FOUR PAWS funds its work with donations from the public in order to maintain absolute independence and integrity. Individual donations form the foundation of the organization and the basis for our activities. We view our donors as both financial and moral supporters. We are well aware of our responsibility toward our donors. We use the funds efficiently and provide transparent information about the allocation of these funds. Please help us continue this important work on behalf of abused animals by making a donation today.
