Mission Statement
SHE-CAN works to equip and empower disadvantaged young women in post-conflict countries to become leaders who change communities within their nations, and ultimately, the world.
About This Cause
SHE-CAN: Supporting Her Education Changes A Nation SHE-CAN is a San Francisco Bay Area based non-profit that builds female global leadership by helping disadvantaged girls from post conflict countries win U.S. scholarships, then supporting them in their return to their home countries and communities as change agents. As our world continues to get smaller, raising a global generation of capable and gutsy female leaders is critical to systemic change. That’s why SHE-CAN seeks out smart, ambitious, low-income young women in post-conflict countries, such as Rwanda, Afghanistan and Cambodia and provides them with a U.S. college education, mentorship and leadership training. Our mentors support each scholar through every step of her transformative journey— from securing a scholarship to thriving in school to finding her voice. All 22 are (and will be) studying at top schools, such as Bennington, Bucknell, Harvard, Lafayette, Oberlin, Smith, and Haverford. Why We Do It Many sources point to women as key to ushering peace, prosperity, and women’s rights in the developing world. Yet, repressive cultural attitudes and lack of higher education prevents them from challenging the system. Widespread change requires an influential number be given opportunities to gain the credentials and the personal confidence needed to defy the system they grew up in, and thrive as change-agents and role models. How We Do It We identify academically talented young leaders who have few opportunities, provide in-country SAT preparation, and pair them with 5-6 American professionals who guide them in applying for scholarships. After they win a scholarship, SHE-CAN funds all non-scholarship costs, their mentor team supports them emotionally and helps them launch their career when they return home.
