Mission Statement
The Mission of MHz Foundation is to re-imagine culture online through digital heritage, patrimony, and metadata tools. We do this by cultivating awareness through the arts by providing free, open digital spaces that expand cultural access while centering the needs of the people who create, care for, and love art and objects. We aim to aggregate publicly available gallery, library, archive, and museum collections cross-institutionally in a single location, and provide a search engine and database of significant open-access materials that users can curate, present, and build upon. The foundation seeks to promote greater equity and diversity in the arts by amplifying underrepresented voices and challenging dominant narratives. The MHz Foundation began as a public access television station in 2005, bringing international programming to the Washington DC market. Over time, the organization evolved and expanded its mission, focusing on cultivating awareness through the arts. In 2018, when its strategic partners embarked on a plan to sell the spectrum and broadcast studio, the MHz Foundation saw a rare opportunity to re-envision itself and create a new way to continue its mission. The foundation began to tune into the communities it wanted to serve, identifying the need for free, open digital spaces that would expand cultural access while centering the needs of the people who create, care for, and love art and objects. This led to the creation of Curationist.org in 2019, a platform that aggregates publicly available gallery, library, archive, and museum content and connects them cross-institutionally in a single location. Today Curationist.org shares over 4.4 million content through 9 museum institutions. In the future, we hope to receive support from donors to help us outreach to smaller and medium-sized museums to make their collections also available through the Curationist.org platform.
About This Cause
The MHz Foundation is a non-profit organization that was established to cultivate awareness through the arts. Their flagship project is Curationist.org, an online platform that promotes equity and justice in a digital age to increase representation and access for underrepresented artists, create a more diverse and inclusive art world, and support the development of more just and equitable societies. Through the Critics of Color program, Curationist aims to address historical and ongoing racial inequalities in the art world by providing a platform for writers and critics of color to share their perspectives on art and culture. By amplifying these voices and showcasing their contributions, the program challenges dominant narratives about art and promotes greater equity and diversity in the art world. The program also contributes to the larger struggle for social justice and equality by ensuring that all voices and perspectives are represented and valued. In addition, Curationist is committed to promoting diversity, challenging colonialism, and supporting Indigenous control over data. Through a social justice lens that is anti-racist, anti-colonial, feminist, queer, and anti-ableist, Curationist promotes storytelling and curiosity into global cultural content. By investing in Curationist, individuals and organizations can support a more sustainable and inclusive future for the gallery, library, archive, and museum industry.
