Mission Statement
The Mission of the Newburgh Armory Unity Center (NAUC) is to provide academic enrichment, civic engagement, and athletic and wellness opportunities to the children and families of the City of Newburgh and Newburgh Enlarged City School District (NECSD).
About This Cause
The Newburgh Armory Unity Center is an organization that fosters collaborative relationships responsive to the specific needs of the City of Newburgh and Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Additionally, the Newburgh Armory will provide a new paradigm for not-for-profit businesses; building a culture of excellence and service within the pursuit of the NAUC’s mission, and serving as an agent of change within the community and non-profit sector. The two primary areas of focus for the NAUC are in education: 1) programs for K-6th-grade literacy, academic enrichment, athletics, health and wellness; and 2) programs supporting naturalization including English as a Second Language, GED classes, computer usage, and preparation for citizenship. In the area of education, literacy and providing academic enrichment opportunities is a core element of the NAUC mission; there are programs serving families of toddlers to bridge the word gap with professional instruction to improve the literacy skills of elementary school students. A particularly innovative NAUC initiative is the organization of unique multi-party collaborations among the region’s colleges, the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, and community groups to expand educational opportunities for both children and adult learners. The Newburgh Armory provides Saturday Morning Enrichment Programming 52 weeks out of the year where educational programming is available to enrolled youth at no cost. Academic classes include reading, mathematics, science, engineering, computer programming, history, art, chess, acting, gardening, and music. NAUC programming provides opportunities for students to develop skills in a wide range of disciplines. These classes provide youth access to additional support and instruction while interacting positively with members of their community, and developing the knowledge and skills to navigate academic and social environments successfully.
