Mission Statement
Friends of Outdoor School is dedicated to increasing student access to Oregon Outdoor School programs that contribute to educational development, inspire youth, and promote personal growth.
About This Cause
Since 1965, Outdoor School has been a vital component of Oregon's public education system. Each year, thousands of families count on the program to introduce their children to nature, ecology, the environment, natural resources, and animal and plant life while keeping them safe, healthy, comfortable, and inspired. Friends of Outdoor School is dedicated to increasing student access to Oregon Outdoor School programs that contribute to educational development, inspire youth, and promote personal growth. We believe that there is no better way to learn about the natural sciences than to be outside to study science as professional scientists do. We accomplish our mission through advocacy, fundraising, and community engagement. Friends of ODS is the key connection between Outdoor School and the larger community of individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies that support Outdoor School programming. We are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion in all that we do. Friends of ODS manages the statewide Outdoor School networks. Our networks work together to: -Promote equitable access to Outdoor School -Identify and remove barriers to participation in Outdoor School -Champion Outdoor School to decision-makers throughout the state -Examine the impact of Outdoor School on students -Tackle problems and capture opportunities as they arise -Advocate for state funding for Oregon students to attend Outdoor School Our goals: -Make sure our community knows how to support ODS. -Maintain permanent funding sources outside the K-12 budget so that all students in the region may attend ODS. -Continue to develop partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits to raise the profile of ODS. Friends of Outdoor School members have: -Secured a permanent source of funding for each Oregon fifth- or sixth-grade students to attend ODS. -Contributed millions of dollars to send students to ODS -Developed hundreds of community partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits on behalf of ODS. Together, we work so that ALL Oregon students may attend a week of Outdoor School.
