Mission Statement

Fit Kids mission is to provide structured physical activity, movement, and mindfulness programs to ensure all children are able to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of exercise.

About This Cause

Fit Kids is a 501(c)3 non-profit that provides structured physical fitness activities to underserved youth. Executive Director Ashley Hunter founded Fit Kids in January 2011, and the organization now impacts more than 23,000 elementary school age children through more than 130 sites. Physical activity at a young age is essential to children’s long-term fitness, including their mental and emotional health. Yet, too many children in underserved communities miss out on structured physical activity, due to school budget cuts, unaffordable organized youth sports programs, and a scarcity of safe places to play. Fit Kids fills the fitness opportunity gap with structured programs that include hundreds of different exercises, games, and fun activities that get kids moving, help them fall in love with fitness, and set them up for successful, healthy futures. Fit Kids is a professionally-designed and supported curriculum that schools and community organizations can implement with their existing staff. Fit Kids partner sites receive our fitness, movement, and mindfulness curriculum in a hard copy format and digitally, via our Coach’s Corner app. Partner Site Coordinators also receive annual training and 1:1 support from our Director of Programs. At this time, we provide both forms of support virtually. When we begin partnership with a site, we provide all necessary fitness equipment to successfully use the curriculum and equipment. The curriculum incorporates agility ladders, medicine balls, balance ropes, hurdles and other equipment into active games that help children develop important fitness skills, such as strength, speed and agility, as well as fundamental coordination, running, kicking and throwing motor skills. We provide new and replacement pieces only with curriculum updates or when equipment breaks or wears out. The Fit Kids curriculum consists of fifty 60-minute lessons that incorporate Warm-Ups, Fitness Movements, Obstacle Courses or Relay Races, PE Games, Yoga Stretches, Cool-Down Stretches, and Mindfulness Exercises. The Fitness movements are based on bodyweight and can be done by any age. The PE Games are suitable for both elementary and middle school grade levels. There are four fitness focus areas —Upper Body, Lower Body, Core Strength, and Agility—that repeat and progress in difficulty over the year. All activities build fitness and motor skills and many encourage communication, teamwork and other social-emotional skill building. Students have access to their own app to access fitness videos as well. Our online Video Library now has more than 200 individual videos, and in response to participant and partner requests, we are always adding more. Each video demonstrates an activity a child can do independently with little or no equipment and limited space. As we renew our partnership with sites year over year, we continue to provide curriculum updates, app maintenance and support, training for new staff, and an open line of communication with the Fit Kids team. We seek feedback from our site partners each year to modify our curriculum and ensure each site is able to implement the program successfully.
