Mission Statement
to advance good health and human flourishing for and with the hardest-to-reach communities
About This Cause
According to the World Health Organization, half of the world’s population cannot obtain essential health services, with doctors, nurses, and facilities either inaccessible, unaffordable, or under-resourced. These gaps in health systems are bridged by millions of community health workers, who provide basic health care to local residents and link them to the healthcare system. They are committed and trusted members of the communities where they live and work, and are often the first point of care for most families, especially in remote, rural and underserved communities. Medic focuses on health workers as a means of reaching and positively impacting underserved communities around the world. We believe quality care can be provided through integrated, community-based health systems, and that health workers and care teams can deliver decentralized and coordinated services. We've built the Community Health Toolkit (CHT), a leading open-source platform for digital health and advanced community health systems. The CHT includes a collection of open-source software frameworks and applications, with resources to help partners design and deploy digital tools (“apps”) for care teams with the support of an active community of collaborators. The CHT supports the unique needs of a given health system, and can be used by community health workers, frontline supervisors, facility-based nurses, health system managers, and even patients and caregivers. Health workers use tools built on the CHT to provide maternal care, assessments and treatment for sick children, malnutrition screening and treatment, and care for infectious and non-communicable diseases. CHT apps support many languages; run offline; work with basic phones, smartphones, tablets, and computers; and support integrated, doorstep primary care. Apps powered by the CHT support 170,000+ frontline health workers in 23 countries in Africa and Asia, and have supported 180+ million moments of care. We envision a more just world in which health workers are supported as they provide care for their communities, where universal health coverage is a reality, and health is a secured human right – for everyone, everywhere, always.
