About This Cause
Appetite For Change is a community-based non-profit with a mission to use food as a tool to build health, wealth and social change. Through our innovative, youth-led programs, social enterprise work, and policy initiatives, we build community capacity to make our own change. Appetite For Change programs are all based around a goal of creating health equity and eliminating health disparities in our home community of North Minneapolis and as a model for engaging and elevating all Black communities. In just 10 years of operation we have gone from a start-up organization with an operating budget of less than $25,000 to a $4 million organization that employs 58 (42 FTE), with an additional 15-20 youth participating in our paid employment training program. AFC has quadrupled in size since 2014, and has become a leader in grassroots, community based work on the Northside. One of the most striking differences between AFC and other organizations with similar missions is how the organization started. AFC was born out of 8 cooking and dialogue sessions that engaged over 400 Black community members in the design of the programming. This process birthed their flagship program, Community Cooks, which gives AFC the opportunity to engage over 500 residents annually in a continuous feedback loop to hear about pressing issues, work to address them, and learn how they can improve the work. Co-founders Princess Haley, Latasha Powell and Michelle Horovitz share a commitment to their innovative community-led model that activates individuals to build racial, economic and health equity. We define the three pillars of our mission as follows: Health; access to, and consumption of fresh and local foods; Wealth: increased employment, wages earned and more investment in people and businesses; Social Change: increased social connectedness and social capital in families and the community. Despite immense challenges faced by society, In 2020 Appetite For Change had the following metrics of success. # of meals served: 500,498 # of people employed/trained: 98 $ invested in the community: $3,799,550 # of people engaged: 49,566 # of hours of engagement: 20,486 We also have dozens of stories and qualitative data to show the impact of our program directly on participants. Through each program, we use different tools to measure our success based on the goals of each program and the audience we serve.
