About This Cause
Youth Mentoring and Sports provides educational, recreational and mentoring services to underserved youth in the bay area. Our organization, of about ten people, has served well over 500 youth and young adults since 2011. We have a variety of programs that serve the community. These include: 1. Website Development Training. This program teaches youth and young adults how to code and design websites. The youth learn to build their own websites and how to market products to the general public. Youth are give the opportunity to display their websites to the class. In addition, guest speakers talk to the youth about their careers in technology and the steps required to attain employment in their field. 2. Social Service Database and Outreach. This program developed and continues to develop a social service database website. The website is a listing of nonprofits resources that helps people in need locate resources. The site also helps people locate organizations that they can support. The program often hires youth to help develop the website and provide feedback. 3. Computer Training. This program teaches underserved youth beginning computer skills. Many of the youth we serve do not have computers or access to a computer. This program teaches youth the basics of Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office and more. The goal is to help youth attain beginning knowledge and help them feel more confident using the computer. 4. Sports and Supports. This program teaches youth soccer skills and organizes competitive activities. The goal of the program is to help youth become more active and develop positive relationships with their peers. We held the soccer program for seven years and will re-launch the program in 2020. Our organization wants to expand our computer and website development courses. We currently serve about 50 youth a year in these classes. We want to serve about 300 a year by 2020 and help our youth find gainful employment in technology fields.
