About This Cause

Little Essentials is a nonprofit organization in Brooklyn that helps low-income families citywide by donating new diapers, lightly-used clothing, and other essential items for infants and young children. Since 2011, we have served 52,000 children and distributed over one million diapers. This year, we: Served over 4,000 children in NYC Helped over 2,000 families living in poverty Distributed nearly 400, 000 diapers Partnered with 60+ community organizations Educated over 100 workshop participants Hired two community members We also run free educational workshops for all members of the communities we serve, which include topics such as promoting early reader literacy, recognizing learning disabilities in children, advocacy and legal rights, infant care, tech support, financial literacy, and GED prep, and COVID-19 vaccine information. We have grown our operations greatly since our founding in 2011 by Sandie Trombert, a Brooklyn mother who, beginning in 2010 as a volunteer, began collecting used items for young children and driving them in her car to donate them to low-income families. The 3 “E’s” describe the tenets of our vision and its implementation. EMPOWER the community by providing essential children’s supplies to lessen the stress that comes with living in poverty. EDUCATE families by providing tools and resources to strengthen parenting and individual skills. ELIMINATE poverty by supporting families and financially compensating parents as Little Essentials’ employees. Today, Little Essentials employs five people and collects donations for infants and young children age five and under that include new diapers and lightly-used clothing, strollers, car seats, bassinets, and portable cribs. We operate a warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. At our warehouse, we receive the donations, and with volunteer assistance, sort through them and prepare individualized packages for low-income families. Our 33 community partners that work with low-income families tell us which items their clients need, pick them up, and bring them to their clients. We also now work with a second tier of partners to provide emergency orders to organizations whose clients are facing emergencies such as homelessness and domestic violence. We now have 21 emergency partners. Our partners serve families throughout NYC's 5 boroughs.
