Mission Statement
FUSE is a national nonprofit that partners with local government to help urban communities thrive. We work with cities on a range of issues, including economic and workforce development, healthcare, public safety, climate change, and education. Our approach centers around an executive fellowship program. We co-design ambitious yet achievable year-long projects with government partners, recruit experienced leaders to take on those challenges, and provide the support and learning opportunities to meet the community’s needs. By helping to craft new policy, roll out new public services, and improve existing programs, we allow governments to work better for the people they serve.
About This Cause
American cities are facing interrelated crises with devastating economic consequences that are disproportionately impacting communities of color. We are grappling with these unprecedented issues as our country is also facing a broader reckoning around racial justice – presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to achieve systemic change. During this time of challenge and change, FUSE Corps has partnered with John Legend and FREEAMERICA to create, The Economic Recovery Initiative, through which we seek to create a more just and inclusive America. Our goal is to drive a reimagination of systems that are rooted in racism and inequality throughout our five key issue areas: jobs, housing, health, education, and justice reform. As of January 2021, FUSE has developed 34 projects with 11 cities. We prioritized cities that are majority-minority demographically and where COVID-related health and economic effects have most impacted low-income families and communities of color. We’re currently partnering with: Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Birmingham, AL; Durham, NC; Houston, TX, Los Angeles, CA; Milwaukee, WI; New Orleans, LA; Oakland, CA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Washington, DC. As additional funding becomes available, we plan to expand the ERI to additional cities in the remainder of 2021 and into 2022.
