Mission Statement
VNS Health Hospice and Palliative Care continues to be one of the largest hospice providers in the New York metropolitan area, having served 5,279 hospice patients in 2015. Founded in 1983, VNS Health Hospice and Palliative Care is a program of hope and humanity that works to achieve comfort, promote choice and provide support. The mission is to enable quality living, comfortable dying and meaningful grieving for individuals and families. Hospice care is provided by a team of professionals with training and expertise in hospice and palliative care. Team members include physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, spiritual care counselors, dieticians, bereavement counselors, home health aides, complementary therapists (massage, music and art), and volunteers. On any given day in 2015, there were 867 patients in our care.
About This Cause
Hospice care is provided primarily in the home. It also is available in nursing homes, in assisted living facilities and in the VNS Health Shirley Goodman and Himan Brown Hospice Residence. The Goodman Brown Residence is an invaluable resource to those who have lived alone and/or may have no one to care for them as their needs increase. Since its opening in June 2006, 460 individuals (42 in 2015) have been cared for at the Residence, located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, with a total occupancy of eight residents at a time. Short-term inpatient care for acute symptom management is provided in the 25-bed VNS Health Haven Hospice Specialty Care Unit, located at Bellevue Hospital. In 2015, 1,060 patients were treated at the Haven.
