About This Cause

In partnership with citizens, businesses and philanthropies, the Detroit Public Safety Foundation helps the Detroit Police, EMS and Fire Departments initiate innovative programs that make Detroit a safer place to live and work. In 2003, the Detroit Police Foundation was incorporated in the state of Michigan as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In 2011, the Detroit Police Foundation changed its name to the Detroit Public Safety Foundation -dedicated to strengthening the Police and Fire Departments and promoting public safety. By supporting innovative projects, this pioneering public-private partnership provides the Police and Fire Departments with the means to launch benchmark programs and further its professionalism. Our role is to invest in the Departments by responding to needs not in the City’s budget. This role is central to the philosophy of the Foundation, whose directors believe that public-spirited citizens share their interest in helping the Departments to be as professional, responsive and creative as possible. The Detroit Public Safety Foundation maintains fundraising for each of its 11 precincts, 38 fire houses, EMS along with very special tailored programming. Through the Fire Department we keep a arson, tall buildings, peer to peer training budget. We maintain a special DPD Museum on the third floor of Headquarters and sell merchandise for the general public to promote good will. The Chief of Police James Craig allows numerous police officers to work with our outreach staff to reduce youth violence, help Detroit high school young adults successfully pass drivers training through out Drive to Thrive Program, mentor high school and middle school children through a structured programs called the Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Citicamp. The officers work with our outreach staff to help gang members and their families reunite and leave the gang world through a very complex, collaborative called Ceasefire. We have a very involved DPD critically injured and Fallen Officer fund with about 18 trained police that are called in to work with family members at the time of an injury or death. These special individuals follow the children of fallen officers through their graduations, celebrate holidays with them and fund families to attend the special events during Police Week when their loved one's name is placed on the wall with other fallen officers. The city of Detroit, the Detroit Fire and Police Departments have authorized the Detroit Public Safety Foundation to seek funding from private sources and apply for grants to support fire and police initiatives. As a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, DPSF depends entirely on the generosity of corporations, individuals, foundations and philanthropic organizations for project and operating budgets. Our volunteer board of directors are civic minded, diverse, individuals who volunteer their time, talent and treasure to support our organization. The programs we sponsor with Detroit Police and Detroit Fire has build significant public trust in the work of the first responders. We believe our community work, mentoring, feeding and clothing programs were significant deterrents to any property damage during the peaceful protests in Detroit in the difficult summer of 2020. The Foundation depends entirely on the generosity of corporations, individuals, foundations, grants, and philanthropic organizations for project and operating budgets. The Detroit Police and Fire Departments have authorized the Foundation to seek funding from private sources to support police and fire initiatives. Through the generosity of partners, the Foundation has invested over $8 million dollars in supporting special projects and activities that play an essential role in ensuring the safety of our City. In addition, the Foundation has secured over $80 million in Federal grants to support the Detroit Police and Fire Departments.
