Mission Statement

To create and enhance educational opportunities for Detroit Public Schools Community District students.

About This Cause

Our mission is to create and enhance educational opportunities for DPSCD students, families and educators. Our vision is that every DPSCD student will receive the support needed for college and career readiness and we are dedicated and committed to bringing needed resources to DPSCD. Established as a nonprofit in 2003, in 2009, thanks to seed funding from Detroit Public Schools (now known as Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), the Detroit Public Schools Foundation (DPS Foundation) was organized to ensure that our students reach their full potential. The Foundation supports innovative learning opportunities, parent engagement, community outreach and a focus on student appreciation of arts and culture. The Foundation provides students with the tools required for success inside and outside the classroom. We believe that by investing in these future leaders, we also strengthen families and our communities. We accomplish this by investing in 4 primary areas: 1. Literacy and Early Childhood Education; STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math); Career Pathways—college and career readiness; and Experiences Beyond the Classroom. We are committed to supporting these strategic priorities and helping thousands of DPSCD students and teachers annually. Currently, the DPS Foundation manages, operates and funds 48 programs across DPSCD on behalf of students, families and educators. These include: Serving as a lead partner, Governance Committee member, and fiduciary on the Connected Futures Initiative which raised over $23 million to support our students during COVID by providing devices, internet connectivity and technical support. Serving as the lead partner and fiduciary with the Ford Motor Company Fund in the operation of the Ford Resource and Engagement Center (FREC) at Fisher Upper Magnet Academy--with a $5 million investment over 5 years. Overseeing a $3.6 million grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation for 4 years to support parent engagement programs including parent-teacher home visits, kindergarten boot camp, and the Parent Academy program, which provides wrap-around support, education and training and health and human service resources. During 2019-2020, we raised over $16.5 million resulting in over 50,000 students receiving tablets, Internet access, scholarships, career exploration and readiness programs, and access to basic needs due to COVID. Recent accomplishments: Raised over $13 million for the Connected Futures Initiative Raised over $61,000 assisting families with basic needs such as food, transportation, Personal Protection Equipment and household supplies. Provided 56 students Detroit College Promise Scholarships ranging from $1,000-$2,500 Implemented our second National Day of Racial Healing Event with over 400 student and adult participants
