Mission Statement

The Magnuson Environmental Stewardship Alliance is organized exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes, more specifically to provide a venue in which to educate and involve the community in stewardship of Warren G. Magnuson Park in Seattle, Washington. Our purpose includes enhancing the habitat for native plants, animals and birds so that there is greater diversity and insuring that the property is a safe aesthetically pleasing environment for its residents and visitors.

About This Cause

We've been working to educate and involve the community in stewardship of Magnuson Park for over two decades. Our work has restored much of what was once largely a sterile and denuded Navy airfield to ecologically healthy habitat, providing environmental benefits, and making it more a enjoyable and pleasing place for people to experience nature. Our work has included obtaining and administering grants, participating in park development planning, serving on park project advisory teams and committees, leading countless volunteer work events, having individual stewards restore and maintain areas, partnering with other organizations, providing plants for the park, and more. Work done by our stewards and events they lead has typically provided $70,000 or more worth of volunteer labor each year. That labor includes tasks like site preparation, planting trees, shrubs, and ground cover plants, summer irrigation, weeding, and more to create or improve urban forest or to restore other native landscape. The outcome of the work gives people places to experience and enjoy the physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits of being close to nature without need to leave the city and also provides other ecosystem services such as wildlife habitat, air and water cleansing, temperature moderation, storm water flow reduction, and carbon sequestration.
