Mission Statement
Muslim Advocates works on the frontlines of civil rights to guarantee freedom and justice for Americans of all faiths.
About This Cause
Muslim Advocates was founded in 2005 by a group of American Muslim lawyers who recognized that our nation’s promise of freedom, justice and equality for all requires active engagement by all Americans working to ensure that our nation lives up to its ideals. Muslim Advocates engages in legal advocacy, policy engagement, and civic education, and serves as a legal resource to promote the full and meaningful participation of Muslims in American civic life. Muslim Advocates has used the courts to seek transparency and accountability for federal government policies that discriminate against American Muslims. In addition, Muslim Advocates filed the first lawsuit against the New York Police Department to end discriminatory spying on American Muslims (Hassan, et al. v. City of New York). Muslim Advocates is the only Muslim civil rights organization that has testified before Congress – now three times – on civil rights issues affecting American Muslims. Our work protecting the freedoms of American Muslims is often done in tandem with numerous other civil rights, religious, and interfaith organizations, as we all recognize that protecting the civil liberties of one group, by extension, protects the rights of all Americans. As a legal and educational organization, Muslim Advocates also plays a leadership role, training nonprofit institutions and attorneys through seminars and technical assistance. Muslim Advocates also counters anti-Muslim hate through the courts, policy-making process, and providing resources to empower victims of hate and hold those who engage in anti-Muslim hate accountable. Muslim Advocates program areas of fighting racial and religious profiling, strengthening charities, and countering hate, work together to empower and pursue justice for the American Muslim community, and Americans of all faiths.
