About This Cause

Connections of Cumberland County (CCC) operates the only “walk-in” Day Resource Center with comprehensive case management designed to serve women and children who are homeless or facing homelessness. Our Goal: Collaborate with all homeless services possible to assist clients to become safe and self-sufficient. We avoid unnecessary duplication by efficiently leveraging available services. Our Case Managers: Assist clients in developing stabilization plans with action steps to address safe housing, employment, and education to increase their earning potential. We use a 12-month follow-up process for DRC clients, and a 24- month process for C2R clients as they work toward becoming self-sufficient. Our comprehensive case management is the heart of CCC. We provide all of our services at NO COST to our clients. Our services are a hand-up to our clients, not a hand-out. Our Guiding Principles: ●Every child needs a safe and nurturing environment in order to grow to be a responsible, self-reliant adult. ●Every homeless mother needs shelter in order to improve her life and the lives of her children. ●It is the community’s moral obligation to act and make a difference in the lives of homeless children, who rely solely on adults in their lives to nurture and guide them into adulthood. Four Programs at Connections: Day Resource Center (DRC): ●Case Management delivered in a warm, caring environment for women and children to feel safe to come in to inquire about assistance. After initial intake process, our staff assists clients with appropriate resources by collaborating with community partners. ●Mental Health provided through group therapy and individual counseling sessions are available weekly. This supports clients as they begin the healing process of significant trauma events in their past, allowing them to move forward and stabilize their lives and the lives of their children. ●Educational workshops and activities are also offered at the DRC. ●Summer camps available when funding is possible allow children to have positive activities and appropriate care and supervision allowing their mothers to retain employment. Connect 2 Re-Direct (C2R): ●Eligible clients are referred by the DRC case manager to participate in this supportive and more intensive case management program. This is a fresh approach using accountability-based practices. This program provides immediate housing opportunity for the client and her children. This includes funding initial rent and utilities deposits, as well as a percentage of rent until mother is employed. ● C.A.R.E. Team (Coaching; Accountability; Resources; Empowerment) that includes a Case Manager, Mental Health Counselor and a Community Volunteer Coach/Mentor support C2R participants and hold them accountable to implement their action steps and make decisions consistent with their goals. Once clients complete the program, they are invited to join a C.A.R.E. Team to “give back” as the Community Volunteer Coach/Mentor. ●Follow-up with participants lasts at least 2 years in order to monitor progress toward achieving goals. We have an active waiting list for this program. ● Cumberland County Schools “Homeless Student Outreach” initiative was started to identify elementary school-aged homeless students (single mother households) to be referred to C2R. It is very important to quickly improve the home environment for these young students so they can learn to read at grade level. Once enrolled, C2R provides immediate housing assistance to the students and their immediate family members. The school system has agreed to offer employment opportunities to mothers of the students, if qualifications are met. Connect 2 Internship (C2I): Since inception July 2014- November 2017, we have had 17 Masters level Social Work interns. They work during our weekly operating hours at the Day Resource Center. This gives them the opportunity to experience real life client cases and build their skill-set. This learning lab program allows CCC to reduce staff costs while increasing our case management capabilities to meet high traffic at the DRC while providing excellent learning experiences for the interns. Connect 2 Enterprise (C2E): This social enterprise program seeks to empower women through employment using a business model to generate cash flow to fund programs that assist women and children experiencing homelessness.
