Mission Statement

Our mission is to inspire, educate, and champion girls, women, and nonbinary people, with a special focus on historically underrepresented groups, to become changemakers in tech.

About This Cause

Girls Who Code (GWC) is an international nonprofit founded in 2012 with a mission to close the gender gap in technology. Today, women represent only 23% of computing degree holders, 27% of the tech workforce, and a mere 11% of executive roles in tech. From a young age, girls face significant barriers—stereotypes and systemic obstacles—that hinder their confidence and sense of belonging. GWC is uniquely positioned to tackle these issues by ensuring that every girl and nonbinary student, from elementary school through college and beyond, has the opportunity to learn to code and to use technology to face real-world problems in their communities. To ensure GWC alumni persist and succeed, we create dynamic pathways for accessing Computer Science (CS) education that feature project-based learning opportunities, clear career pathways, pre-internship experiences, and a supportive sisterhood of peers and role models – equipping students with essential skills and instilling the belief that they belong in tech and can drive meaningful change. In thirteen years, GWC has reached over 760,000 students through our programming, with over half of our students coming from historically underrepresented groups. Our network of nearly 330,000 college-aged or post-college alumni are earning CS and related degrees at 5x the national average. GWC is building the largest pipeline of future female technologists in the U.S. and globally. Yet we also know we must remain nimble as the tech industry faces radical disruption from GenAI and emerging technologies. GWC is seizing this pivotal moment to refresh our Strategic Plan and amplify our impact. Over the next five years, we are committed to reaching five million girls, women, and nonbinary individuals, preparing them for the evolving landscape of AI and cutting-edge technology, while empowering our alumni to thrive in the workforce. We are on track to close the gender gap in new, entry-level tech jobs, but achieving this ambitious goal requires partners who share our vision, allowing us to implement the activities at the heart of our strategic refresh.
