Mission Statement

Wiki Education engages students and academics to improve Wikipedia, enrich student learning, and build a more informed public.

About This Cause

Wiki Education serves as the bridge between academia and Wikipedia. We run programs that seek to build connections between universities and cultural institutions and Wikipedia and Wikidata in the United States and Canada. We envision a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. Our organization has its origins in 2010 at the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that runs Wikipedia. After noticing a trend of professors who were Wikipedia editors themselves assigning students to improve articles, our current Executive Director, Frank Schulenburg, launched what is now known as the Wikipedia Student Program. He aimed to create a support structure that enabled instructors without Wikipedia expertise to teach with Wikipedia. After developing the proof of concept, the Wikimedia Foundation spun our program off into an independent nonprofit organization in 2014. Program staff — including our entire senior leadership team — served as the inaugural staff of the new nonprofit. Since then, Wiki Education has focused on scaling the impact of the Wikipedia Student Program and brought teaching with Wikipedia to hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The result of teaching a Wikipedia assignment is a deep learning experience for more than 109,000 students who have added more than 80 million words to Wikipedia. That's the equivalent of 144 copies of War & Peace, or almost two full copies of the last print edition of Encyclopedia Britannica.
