Mission Statement

Georgetown Heritage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to revitalize, activate, and interpret the National Park Service assets in Georgetown into inviting, inclusive, and inspiring destinations, with an initial focus on the C&O Canal National Historical Park. Our first priority is to restore and revitalize the mile-long section of the C&O Canal that runs through Georgetown. It is a unique and beloved piece of our neighborhood’s – and America’s – history. It is a gateway into the story of our industrial past, and a place for exercise, recreation, and reflection.

About This Cause

As an official Friends Group of the National Park Service, Georgetown Heritage is organizing our community to raise both public and private resources to restore, enliven, and interpret the Georgetown section of the C&O Canal. Our first step in this process is to develop a comprehensive master plan to guide our efforts. The National Park Service and Georgetown Heritage are partners in restoring, reimagining and revitalizing a one-mile section of Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O Canal) National Historical Park, which begins with a comprehensive plan. The Georgetown Canal Plan has been developed in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), ensuring the park’s natural and cultural resources are carefully considered and protected. In early 2020, the National Park Service finalized and released the Environmental Assessment for the Georgetown Canal Plan, and signed a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). In other words, NPS has now approved the design of the Canal Plan. Moving forward, Georgetown Heritage and NPS will implement design concepts that include: Towpath stabilization, rehabilitation, and selective widening where appropriate Improved canal and towpath access and accessibility Increased interpretive and educational opportunities More welcoming and usable open spaces This is only the beginning of a design process that will span many years, and include additional reviews and community feedback. Implementation will be multi-phased, and we will continue to notify you in advance of any construction activities that may create temporary road closures or detours. Funding for the Georgetown Canal Plan comes from the District of Columbia Executive Office of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, the Georgetown Business Improvement District, and private philanthropy. A combination of public and private sources will fund the implementation of the plan.
