Mission Statement
Our promise is to help families experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable housing and independence through a community-based response.
About This Cause
Family Promise of Metro East is a new, local affiliate of a proven and successful nationwide program that, for over 30 years, has effectively addressed the crisis of family homelessness in communities across the country. The national office of Family Promise was founded in New Jersey in 1988 and has since grown to have over 200 Affiliates in 43 states. Through Family Promises’ core programs, which include prevention, shelter, and stabilization, Affiliates have collectively served over one million individuals since founding, including over 100,000 individuals in 2019. Nationally (pre-pandemic) 82% of families exited shelter to stable housing, with an average length of stay of nine weeks. Family Promise of Metro East (FPME) is a new affiliate, currently forming with the goal of serving families experiencing homelessness in NE and SE Portland by the end of 2021. The core of our services is an Interfaith Hospitality Network (Network), a collaborative effort in which congregations provide rooms for overnight shelter; social service agencies refer families experiencing homelessness; FPME provides a day center and case management; and the partner congregations and organizations supply the volunteers. Because Family Promise utilizes existing resources in the community, the model is cost-efficient. Using this model, on average, for every dollar raised, we will receive $3 of in-kind support from existing community resources. Once operational, we will: Provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive assistance for homeless families with children, utilizing existing facilities and services throughout the community; Encourage and increase volunteerism in the community to provide direct services on behalf of homeless and low-income families.
