About This Cause
Hearing Speech + Deaf Center believes that communication is the foundation of all human interactions. We work for communication equity by making hearing, speech, and deaf services available to anyone regardless of income or insurance status. About three-quarters of the center’s patients (74%) report incomes below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level, and we provided more than $2 million in free or discounted treatment and services in the past five years. In that same period, we reached more than 27,000 of our neighbors. Former Ohio First Lady Anna Pattison (1859-1959) founded our predecessor, the Cincinnati League for the Hard of Hearing, in 1925. Separately, the influenza outbreak of 1937 left Jean Westheimer Rothenberg (1908-2007) hard of hearing at age 29. She began a lifelong quest to improve local services for communication disorders. Rothenberg joined with "the League" in 1950 to form the Cincinnati Speech and Hearing Center. In 1976, our Community Services for the Deaf division partnered with Ohio's Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (now known as Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities, or OOD) to serve the needs of Ohioans with deafness. We adopted the name "Hearing Speech + Deaf Center" in 1999 to reflect our comprehensive services. Over the years, our organization forged close ties with the University of Cincinnati, leading UC to establish its Communication Sciences and Disorders department and award Rothenberg an honorary doctorate in 2000. Today we offer support to anyone in Greater Cincinnati with communication disorders or deafness through three divisions for communication equity: 1).
