Mission Statement

HER Cincinnati empowers women to break the cycles of poverty, addiction, and human trafficking. Our vision is a community where all women have the skills and the confidence to thrive.

About This Cause

Founded in 1830, HER Cincinnati is the City of Cincinnati's longest continuously operating social service agency. HER Cincinnati has served hundreds of thousands of women, men, and children with meals, health care, counseling, education, housing, and other critical services throughout its history. In 2021, the agency changed its name from Cincinnati Union Bethel to HER Cincinnati to reflect a strategic shift toward three core services (Housing, Education, and Recovery) and a new focus on empowering women. The agency’s programs are outlined below. PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS (1) OFF THE STREETS [EST. 2006]: Inducing or exploiting substance use disorders is the leading form of "force, fraud, and/or coercion” used by sex traffickers nationwide (Polaris 2021). The Ohio Attorney General's Office has found that this statistic holds true across the State of Ohio, where "drug, alcohol, or other dependenc[ies]" are the leading risk factors for trafficking victimization. Recognizing that substance use and human trafficking are deeply interrelated, HER Cincinnati established Off the Streets (OTS) to empower women to break free from both cycles. Through this 24-bed recovery program, the agency provides trauma-informed addiction recovery services to women who are survivors of domestic human trafficking. (2) THE ANNA LOUISE INN [EST. 1909]: The Anna Louise Inn (“the Inn”) is HER Cincinnati’s 85-unit permanent supportive housing program. With a project-based HUD voucher, women who are at risk of experiencing homelessness can rent a subsidized apartment at the Inn, receive access to our comprehensive case management services, and work towards greater self-sufficiency. (3) CINCINNATI SCHOLAR HOUSE [Est. 2020]: Through Cincinnati Scholar House, HER Cincinnati provides transitional housing and wraparound support services to low-income single mothers and their children. Participating parents work towards earning postsecondary credentials while their children work towards achieving age-appropriate academic and developmental milestones. HER Cincinnati founded this program to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty experienced by low-income families in our region.
