About This Cause

Founded in 1978, The Dairy Barn Arts Center was established in a historic barn built in 1914 as a part of the Athens State Hospital. The barn had fallen out of use and was slated to be razed. With great support from the local community, the barn was transformed into a premium arts center and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Within its first year of existence, The Dairy Barn established a revolutionary exhibition called Quilt National: The Best of Contemporary Quilts. This exhibition took the fiber arts community by storm and it is now considered the most renowned biennial contemporary quilt exhibition in the world. The Dairy Barn serves over 9,000 individuals per year, primarily through three avenues: exhibitions, diverse educational programming, and three art studios (ceramics, fiber arts, and digital media).
