Mission Statement
Aullwood is an environmental education center and Audubon Center of the National Audubon Society in western Ohio
About This Cause
Aullwood Audubon is a 200-acre nature sanctuary and educational farm in Dayton, Ohio. Part of the National Audubon Society, it is nationally recognized for environmental programming that focuses on connecting children of all ages with the wonders of birds, nature, wildlife and bird-friendly farming. Aullwood’s sanctuary includes wetlands, woodlands, meadows, prairies, ponds, marshes and farmland (and farm animals!) with eight miles of walking trails. Aullwood’s new exhibit, “The Troll That Hatched an Egg by Thomas Dambo” is combining art and science as the trolls teach us about conservation, protecting our earth and learning what birds need to survive and thrive. Birds, nature, ecosystems and conservation are all central to Aullwood Audubon’s mission, which is reflected in the trolls’ story. The exhibition also pays tribute to Dayton’s place in the history of aviation and the wonder of so many children who see birds (and airplanes) fly for the first time. In fact, the Wright brothers studied the flight of birds as they worked to design the first airplane. It makes sense that a young troll would also choose birds as her teachers. For 66 years, Aullwood has provided students with unique and engaging hands-on experiences with life-long impacts. Encountering a devoted staff of 14 full-time, 6 part-time and 200 volunteers in an unequaled nature sanctuary, young and old expand mind and spirit in an atmosphere of fun, excitement and discovery. Aullwood Audubon welcomes over 80,000 visitors of all ages and abilities annually for special events, weekend or evening activities, outreach programs or field trips. Each year Aullwood serves over 20,000 students from 50 schools in onsite field trip experiences or in local schools with outreach programs with more than 24 educational programs that meet Ohio Revised Education Standards. These programs include topics such as Geology & Fossils, Birds of Prey, Farmyard Adventures, Candle Dipping plus many artistic residency programs conducted in local schools. Aullwood is a nationally recognized institution and serves as the model for hundreds of nature centers and farms around the country. Aullwood hosts the only farm-based Head Start preschool in the country.
