Mission Statement
To nourish the community by feeding the body, promoting overall well-being, and creating a welcoming and inclusive space where all are treated with respect and dignity, and are made to feel comfortable asking for help.
About This Cause
Since its inception in 1979, Community Kitchen, Inc.'s (CKI) most fundamental calling has been to improve quality of life for those in need by feeding people facing hunger. CKI serves the community by promoting stabilization in the lives of its clients through the provision of basic safety net and emergency food service to community members in need. CKI is an inclusive space in which ALL are welcomed to the table, are fed, are treated with dignity and respect, and are made to feel comfortable asking for help. We increase access to food, thereby decreasing food insecurity and related crises, while remaining attuned and responsive to socioeconomic factors that contribute to hunger. With the ultimate aim of positioning clients for more productive and meaningful living, primary services include provision of nutritious meals, distribution of personal care packs, and strategic referrals to related agencies that address intersecting needs, such as those associated with shelter, healthcare, and/or material/cash assistance. CKI operates two sites, both proximal to downtown Columbus; the operation offers two meals a day six days a week at its primary commercial kitchen location in the Old Oaks/Livingston Avenue area, and two meals a day five days a week as its secondary satellite kitchen location in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville district. Across its work, CKI maintains a focus on families, creating opportunities for children to dine alongside of their adult family members. Depending upon trends in local needs, CKI prepares 250-350 meals per day, and averages more that 100,000 meals served every year.
