Mission Statement
The Association for the Development of Vocal Artistry and Neighborhood Cultural Enrichment (ADVANCE) is a minority founded, community-based, not-for-profit professional vocal arts organization, setting new standards in musical programming and arts education. Our board and participatory artists are committed to the promotion of understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of classical music and opera, emphasizing black themes. DBA as MORE Opera, we strive to make opera accessible to the general public, presenting concerts, educational programs and free music choral training to under-served audiences including disadvantaged youths and elderly persons throughout Manhattan.
About This Cause
Music gives pleasure and inspires the soul, enabling us to express, emote and gain understanding. Opera is possibly the most complete art form, and participation in an opera chorus can have a transforming effect. ADVANCE has trained community residents to participate in its professional level musical performances since 1989. In 2002 ADVANCE’s opera producing arm, MORE Opera began preparing a community chorus to perform in concert with professional opera artists, trained by recognized arts educators and experts in opera and performance. The free training program introduces an inter-generational group of amateur choristers and audiences to opera, bridging diverse communities through the transformative world of opera utilizing 1) professional level experiences in rehearsal and performance, 2) developing musicianship, 3) learning vocal technique, repertoire, and style, and proper performance practices. The chorus rehearses one or two times per week for six weeks prior to a performance. The singers practice in a calm and engaging rehearsal environment, and extra rehearsal time and sectionals are provided to non-readers and others who may need additional preparation.
