About This Cause

Mission Statement: Hope House Rescue Mission (HHM) strives to eliminate homelessness in our community. We provide physical, emotional, mental and spiritual resources regardless of race, religion, or social status. Driving Values: Faith – Collaboration – Empowerment – Accountability – Compassion Since 1989, Hope House Rescue Mission has served homeless men, women and children in Butler, Warren, and surrounding counties in Southwest Ohio on a yearly basis; providing for their basic needs with safe, emergency shelter, three meals per day, clothing, personal care items and basic social services. On November 1, 2010, Hope House began operating the Center of Hope for Women and Children at 1300 Girard Avenue in Middletown, housing women and children in a facility separate from the men. The opening of the additional facility has allowed Hope House to increase its bed capacity from 45 to 90. Purpose: More than an emergency shelter, HHM offers comprehensive programs and services designed to promote long-term, sustainable life transformation. We have discovered that breaking the cycle of homelessness takes time. Since homelessness is the result of a combination of circumstances or decisions made over a long period of time, a comprehensive, strategic plan of action is needed to move these families and individuals forward into self-sufficiency. These action plans begin with a Ph.D.-level assessment and are only completed following comprehensive case management, addiction recovery, primary and mental health treatment, and introduction of other social services. Case managers assist individuals and families in obtaining identification cards and birth certificates, which are required to obtain employment. Affordable permanent housing is sought and usually obtained, further enabling individuals to climb out of poverty. By referring clients to proper heath care and mental health agencies, case managers help remove physical and mental barriers, further enabling clients to climb out of poverty. Referrals from wrap-around services help insure long-lasting life change. We collaborate with many agencies to provide individual, comprehensive, community services and support such as abuse survivor support groups, child development, legal assistance, transitional housing, permanent affordable housing, and transportation. Whenever a need arises, our case managers work with an established contact at one of our collaborating partner agencies. We also work with clients to help them apply for essential services (food stamps, WIC, Medicaid, etc.). Together, all team members work to improve, strengthen, and stabilize family functioning and child well-being. In 2013 we modeled our men’s program after our highly effective women’s program. Both shelters now include mandatory classes, group sessions and individual goal setting to identify and tackle root causes of homelessness. In addition to anger management and addictive behavior courses, participants attend classes on job skills, life management and life application skills. The courses are taught by professionals who teach certificated curriculums developed by licensed professionals in their area of expertise. Esteem building activities include an organic garden at the women’s shelter which provides both nutrition education but also instills work ethic and an ethic of caring. Mothers and children work side by side to nurture, grow, harvest and prepare fruits and vegetables. Regular music time is provided for children by a committed volunteer who plays guitar and sings songs. Integration of the arts as a method of self-esteem building and a point of joy contributes to the holistic view of tackling poverty.
