Mission Statement
The Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned, abused, and neglected animals.
About This Cause
The Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary rescues a great number of animals annually from abandonment, cruelty and deprivation of any kind. We rescue hundreds of puppies each year from 2 days old and up, bottle feeding as necessary. Our puppies are rescued from reservations, shelter euthanasia lists, and dumpsters. Horses in starved conditions are seized by the state livestock inspector, and brought to the sanctuary, or we will find them dumped. Cats arrive from individuals who have found them stray and also from animal shelters' euthanasia lists. Poultry and rabbits are rescued statewide. Rehabilitation and veterinary care is granted to every rescued animal. The Sanctuary has beautiful, large habitats for all of the animals. No cages are used. Nursing mother dogs have special, private nurseries which are quiet and extremely comfortable. The staff provides personal attention for the nursing mothers and puppies. This high quality care is non-existent in other parts of New Mexico. Most animals arrive at the sanctuary in pathetic condition and in immediate need of veterinary care. They are starved and often ill and emaciated. It should be understood that New Mexico has, unfortunately, extensive abuse and neglect of animals. This state is number one in animal abuse in the nation. We work with the Smith Veterinary Hospital in Santa Fe which comprises a team of 12 veterinarians and their staff. The hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association. There are 900 requirements for this accreditation. Veterinary medicine is the Sanctuary's largest expense, coming to $6,000-$7,000 each month with a 30% discount included in this figure. Frequent emergency care is also necessary, which is provided by the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center of Santa Fe. These emergency costs come to several thousand dollars each year. Our second largest expense is food for all of the species. These figures are reflected in the 990 tax form. The third largest expense is staff. The Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary provides humane education and tours for numerous school groups, activities groups, and adult visitors. It would take many pages to describe all facets of the Sanctuary, but we are more than happy to answer any questions. The Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary is located in Glorieta, New Mexico on 130 acres of mountainous, forested land, which was donated to the cause in 1998. The last 3 years we have become capable of rescuing more and more abandoned puppies. We have been able to make healthy and constructive contacts in Northern Colorado where we send our rehabilitated puppies for adoption in caring communities. We have also been increasing the size of our habitats, and we have been able to make many improvements. One of the improvements is a very large aviary for rescued doves. These rescued doves cannot be released into the wild. Our key programs include the rescue and rehabilitation of litter after litter of abandoned puppies. This is a great concern in New Mexico because the euthanasia rates at New Mexico shelters are extremely high. In our rescue work the communities we serve are low income and generally have little compassion for animals. The communities we serve exist throughout New Mexico and they generally consist of Hispanic and Indian populations. In terms of statistics we receive most of our abandoned litters from southern New Mexico just north of the Mexican border. Our goal is to rescue and rehabilitate as many abandoned puppies and nursing mothers as we can. Rehabilitation can take anywhere from 1 week to 6 months, depending on the severity of the animal's health and condition. The Sanctuary has transported over 4000 dogs to Colorado, which we originally rescued in New Mexico. The need is very great and the Sanctuary does all it can. The Sanctuary is unique in that it has lots of land under conservation easement. The setting in the Sangre de Cristo mountains is beautiful. The animals love the Sanctuary and we have many visitors and school children arriving almost every day. We are making efforts to increase our contacts in other states in order to find additional destinations for our rehabilitated puppies. There is no other project of this nature in our community. In New Mexico, the capacity for care and compassion is limited. There is an animal shelter in Santa Fe, but our procedures and practices are extremely different. The Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary provides lifelong care when necessary. This high quality of care is non-existent in other parts of NM. Our work has had a very fruitful impact on the community. The director and staff of the Heart and Soul Sanctuary are present, active and observant. We are compassionate and intensely aware of the rehabilitation process. The success of our rehabilitation efforts is measured in terms of adoptable puppies and happy resident animals. The board of directors is extremely valuable in terms of evaluation, decision-making and public relations.
