About This Cause

Ohio Pug Rescue, Inc.. Ohio Pug Rescue Inc. (OPR) officially began in January 2001. But the rescuing started even before then by a group called the Mid-Ohio Pug Society or MOPS. MOPS was started in late 1989 by a group of conscientious breeders and pug owners who wanted to sponsor responsible pug guardianship in Central Ohio. In early 1997, the group began rescue activities and the number of pugs rescued increased every year. By late 2000, the rescue activities had begun to overtake MOPS’ other endeavors. Some people wanted to promote pugs through AKC showing and quality in breeding. Other people wanted to focus only on charitable and educational rescue activities. So a decision was made to split off the rescue work into a new group, which would focus purely on rescue and would work throughout Ohio, not just in the Columbus area. And so OPR was born! It was set up as non-profit corporation in the State of Ohio. The name was trademarked, and a logo was developed. Most importantly, OPR filed and was approved as a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization with the IRS. Donations to OPR are tax deductible! The official purpose of the newly formed OPR is still the same today: to assure the safe surrender, foster care, and placement of homeless pugs while promoting public education regarding spay/neuter programs and the care of the Pug breed. In other words, it is all about the pugs. All of OPR’s undertakings are completed by a large group of volunteers, directed by some great team leaders. Every single member is a volunteer and not paid for the terrific work they do. The team leaders coordinate everything and they have a lot of experience doing it! The rescue workload is divided into areas such as surrenders, foster care, adoptions, fundraising, and education. Surrenders. OPR takes in pure bred pugs from throughout Ohio. Yes, a few mixed-pugs have been in OPR, but the focus is on purebred. If you know of a pug in need, please directly contact Terri Wolf, the Rescue Coordinator., Please do not give humane societies and dog shelters your name as the contact for OPR. Every single humane society in Ohio has Terri’s name and contact information. It is much less confusing for them to have a single contact for pugs than to juggle the names of several people. And please don’t accept a pug into OPR without Terri giving you the okay first. Terri has the awesome responsibility of guaranteeing there are foster homes, veterinary care, and enough money to pay for the veterinary care for every dog that comes into OPR. Sometimes, an owner surrendering a pug will be asked to wait a couple of weeks until a space is available in a foster home. But don’t worry! These waits only occur if the dog is not in any danger. Sometimes Terri can even work with the human to keep a pug happily in its home with a little housebreaking or training advice! Foster care. Every OPR foster home is a safe, loving environment for a pug to stay while s/he receives medical attention and waits for its forever home. New foster homes are always needed, and OPR members are encouraged to consider this fun and rewarding experience. The foster homes are coordinated by the Foster Home Coordinators. You can contact the Coordinators to learn how to foster. Fostering can vary in length from as short as a couple days (while a regular Foster Family goes on vacation) to as long as several months (while a home is found for an older or medically challenged dog). Fostering means treating this new dog as one of your own, and providing it food, transportation to vet appointments, toys, and love. Foster homes also help with housebreaking, socialization, and other training and emotional needs. The main pre-requisite for fostering isn’t having a fancy house or fancy food though; it is simply love. Most pugs quickly become comfortable in their new foster home. Every foster pug is spayed or neutered, updated on shots, vet checked, and implanted with a microchip before it is placed for adoption. Each dog also receives any special vet care it needs - OPR pugs have had knee, eye, leg, nasal, cancer, and all other types of surgery, as well as treatment for mange, parvo, worms, heartworm, fleas, and anything else you can think of. All of the vet care is provided by OPR approved veterinarians and paid for by OPR. Adoptions. All adoptions are completed through an application and screening process. OPR foster dogs are only adopted within the State of Ohio, and only to homes that are appropriate for each individual pug. OPR finds the best possible home for each dog. Being a member of OPR doesn’t mean automatically getting a pug. Families interested in adopting must fill out an online. Every application is read, and the volunteer screeners try to call as many of the applicants as soon as possible for phone interviews. The goal is to match each foster pug to a forever home that best fits his or her needs. For example, a traumatized pug that is afraid of children will only be adopted to an adult household, and a very female dominant pug can’t go to a house with other girl dogs. If a phone interview determines a good match with a pug in foster care, an adoption offer will be made. The OPR volunteer conducting the adoption will make sure the foster pug is comfortable in the new home and the new home is comfortable with the pug. Only if everyone, human and canine alike, is happy will an adoption occur. The adoption fee is based on the pug’s age, but often it isn’t enough to cover a foster pug's vet expenses. Which leads us to… Fundraising and Education. Fundraising is a very important part of OPR. In order to pay for all of the vet care for each and every pug, fundraising occurs year-round. This section is run by our hardworking Fundraising & Events Committee. The great thing about the fundraising events is that they are FUN! The biggest fundraiser each year is the Rescue Reunion and Fundraiser, held the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend each year. But other enjoyable activities occur all the time. OPR members are needed to help at the Reunion and at all types of other events held throughout Ohio. There are rescue fairs, pug parties such as Santa in September, Pugfest, Pet Expos, dog parades, dog park events, garage sales, and even bar nights. It is very easy for OPR members to help. Most events just need members to come by for a couple of hours with their pug, discuss pugs and OPR, and maybe sell a T-shirt or some dog treats. It’s that easy! The upcoming events are listed and are also always online at www.ohiopugrescue.com. Help is needed at each and every event, so please volunteer for as little as an hour or as long as a day. Some people want to do more and have their own fundraising events such as garage sales. If you are interested in doing so or in asking businesses for donations, please contact the Events Committee. They can help with directions on how to utilize OPR’s 501(c)3 status, how to get receipts for donations, and everything else. The bottom line is OPR is made up of dedicated people do a wide variety of things such as getting food for foster dogs, transporting dogs from surrender to a foster home, performing adoptions, keeping up the website, editing the newsletter, making items to sell at fundraisers, and lots and lots of other great things. If you have any questions, the OPR team leaders are listed below. Feel free to contact them. The great people of OPR give money, time, and love. Whether they can only give one hour and $1 or can commit to full-time fostering and $1000, we appreciate each and every one. Even the smallest contribution is an important help to all of the OPR pugs.
