Mission Statement
Emotion Literacy Advocates™ (ELA) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization comprised of a group of generative artists, technicians and social activists in Seattle who came together at the turn of the millennium to further ELA's mission: to create learning forums for insight into emotion through language and the arts.
About This Cause
Emotion Literacy Advocates creates and produces unique learning tools that incorporate the language arts, theatre, music and science to address cultural and environmental issues with self and social awareness. Specially designed programs serve children and families through learning institutions, social service agencies and media outlets. Currently, we are piloting, researching and developing a multi-media, arts-based curriculum for mindbody practitioners working with clients suffering from chronic pain. We are looking for testers of this program and another multi-media curriculum (virtual musical picture books with study guides), a resource for those who work with teens. Emotion Literacy Advocates' Programs model, guide and present arts-based prompts for developing a more intentional, more inclusive way of communicating—in all aspects of of work, home and play. Communication keys built into ELA’s interactive arts-based curricula, open perceptual doors—for insights to be gleaned—relative to feelings, needs and the nature of everyday language. All of our programs are part independent study (responding to original musical, theatrical and literary prompts for reflective writing) and group discussions (to share thoughts, feelings, questions, obstacles, grief, delight and new insights). Comments: “...engaging and lively! We were so pleased with the ELA program and feel that it added greatly to our focus on the theme of "Believe in Yourself." —Seattle Children's Museum “I listened to the song. How fun and such a smart way to approach the problem.” —Valerie Easton, Seattle Times Pacific Northwest Magazine “What we looked at here is extremely relevant to my work. Every teacher should be asked (required) to take your course on emotion literacy.” —Connie Thomas, Seattle public school teacher “...the children listen to the CD over and over again for, literally, hours. This CD is introducing vocabulary and is building self esteem—gives the parents tools for talking to their child.” —Sue Rogge, Linda Miner, Family Support Partnership Program @ Tacoma/Pierce County WA State Health Department “It is wonderful to learn a new idea and even more wonderful to have lived it these past six months—simple, yet profound, used and useful—is your/my behavior now hiding feelings or expressing feelings? Thanks.” —Wm Waldman, M.D “This song speaks to the power of singing as a learning tool...I especially like the attention to belief systems and personal motivations that are informing each character's decision.” —Liz Silvestrini, Education Coordinator, Sustainable Seattle “...a wonderful, innovative tool...after observing some of this material in action, I can unequivocally say this teaching tool is of great value in the classroom.” —Lisa Love, health education specialist for Seattle Public Schools “Emotion Literacy Advocates' movie is a marriage between music, literature, animation, and motion pictures. But as amazing as its form is, its content shines as well...a well written story about people and their interaction with the environment...the artistry of the creators shines through the technology used to bring it to the audience...charming!” —John F. Williams, SEA-media.org "Has fear ever kept you silent? You might be interested to hear from Pamela Sackett...using her words in compelling fashion to entertain and teach about the essential role language plays in relationship to feelings...." ―Seattle Post-Intelligencer A partial list of partners and beneficiaries of Emotion Literacy Advocates arts-based learning tools and programs: Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Film Archive Allied Arts Americorps Anacortes Cinemas Antioch University Art Institute Seattle Arts in Motion Bainbridge Cinemas Banyen Books & Sound, Vancouver, B.C.
