Mission Statement

Founded by clergy members and community volunteers in 2002, Brooklyn Rescue Mission Urban Harvest Center Inc (BRMUHC) provides food and compassionate care to hungry and hurting people in Brooklyn, New York. Co-founded by Robert and DeVanie Jackson, the Brooklyn Rescue Mission Urban Harvest Center Inc. has spent over two decades in community service, helping the community by providing fresh, healthy food to residents living at risk of hunger in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Rescue Mission has served over 3 million meals to Brooklyn and other New York City residents. The BRMUHC, which consists of a hunger relief food pantry, an urban farming community food program, and a youth leadership development program located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, serves five neighborhoods of Brooklyn struggling with high levels of poverty, unemployment, violence, chronic illnesses, and childhood hunger. Brooklyn Rescue Mission has won various awards from organizations such as New York City Parks, Why Hunger, Brooklyn Borough's President's Office, Brooklyn History Society, New York City Food Bank, and New York City Harvest. Our program is designed to improve the lives of residents fighting to overcome and defeat hunger.

About This Cause

New York City is the land of plenty, but hunger is an everyday reality for 1 in 8 residents. Between 2020 and 2022, 396,188 people in Brooklyn lived in food-insecure households, the highest number in New York City. These are often hard-working adults, children, and seniors who cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for days, significantly sacrificing personal necessities to feed their families. BRMUHC provides low-income seniors and families the fuel to survive and even thrive during these challenging financial times and the outstanding support of our donors and charitable food providers. Nearly 49 million Americans don't know where their next meal will come from. Many are working families, children, and the elderly. Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, has a twenty-four percent poverty rate, and many of the poorest community members need relief. The food program feeds children and their families living in five neighborhoods in Brooklyn who are hungry, living in poverty, and may not have a hot meal this evening. Hard-working families in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, are making difficult decisions between paying for food or paying their rent. BRMUHC families struggling with hunger receive a nutritious basket of fresh, healthy food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, and wholesome grocery items such as fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, rice and pasta, and cereal, to help make ends meet. Our food program is built on a greater sense of community; together, we are stronger than we are as individuals. That is the spirit in which we feed and advocate for hungry, struggling families and seniors in our community of Brooklyn, NY. - Rev. Robert Ennis Jackson, Co-Founder.
