About This Cause
Established in 2003, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation (CHMF) is an independent public charity governed by a community board of 29 trustees, and is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We are dedicated to advancing the health and wellness of Michigan’s children. This initiative is accomplished through philanthropic support for groundbreaking medical research, pediatric medical education and community benefit programs, including initiatives aimed at the prevention of childhood illnesses and injuries. Through a grant-making process, the Foundation collaborates with experts at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Wayne State University, City of Detroit and numerous other community organizations to fund programs to improve the health of Michigan’s children. Below are some examples of programs we support. PEDIATRIC RESEARCH The Foundation funds pediatric research to discover new ways of diagnosing and treating children’s medical conditions, including leukemia and cancers; asthma; heart conditions; bipolar and other mental health disorders; sickle cell disease; emergency conditions and others. We also play a key role in helping researchers qualify for funding from sources such as the National Institutes of Health. COMMUNITY BENEFIT Furthermore, we fund community, patient and family support and wellness programs such as injury prevention, child life support services, healing arts programs, clothes and gift programs for hospitalized children. In 2015, CHMF provided funding to the City of Detroit Health Department for lead testing at Detroit Public Schools and daycare facilities. MEDICAL EDUCATION In addition, we fund education programs so that pediatric health professionals can learn about the latest techniques and knowledge to provide the best care possible for children. Examples include a pediatric research day, nursing conference, annual clinic days and various medical lectures. These relationships and programs are all designed to provide the greatest impact possible, with regards to the improvement of young people’s health – locally, statewide and beyond.
