About This Cause
Al-Maun (Neighborly Needs) Las Vegas, NV (Al-Maun) is a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Nevada. It was organized in August 2003 exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. The Tax Identification Number is 32-0087926. Activities are conducted by community volunteers and organized by officers of Al-Maun. Al-Maun programs: 1. Al-Maun Food and Nutrition Programs • Giving Grain Food Pantry 2014 2. Al-Maun Resource Center • Fajr al-Islam Learning Center • GED Adult Education • "The Homework Stop" • Computer Lab and Learning Library 2014 3. Al-Maun Wellness Center 4. Al-Maun House for Women 5. Al-Maun Rental and Utilities Assistance (Zakat Program) 1. Al-Maun Food and Nutrition Program • Al-Maun Food and Nutrition Program (AM Nutrition) is designed to reduce hunger by providing FREE nutritional bags of groceries and hot meals to low-income individuals and the homeless. Inadequate nutrition during any period of childhood can have detrimental effects on cognitive development and adult productivity. To help combat this problem, AM Nutrition provides adequate nutrition to those in need by supplying basic groceries. We serve approximately 150 individuals (youth, mothers, senior citizens and the homeless) every week. AM Nutrition has reached the goal of establishing a year-round program that includes weekly food bag distributions and a weekly feeding of the homeless in the community. AM Nutrition currently supports the nutrition program through private donations and fundraisers. No services or charges are required in exchange for meals or food bags. AM Nutrition provides services to any person that comes with any government identification to prove eligibility. Services are provided at 711 Morgan Ave., Las Vegas, NV. AM Nutrition also provides services to clients that are walk-ins or referrals from other agencies. Grocery bag assistance is provided to families up to a maximum of 4 times per month. • “Giving Grain Food Pantry” established in 2014 is desperately needed in the Las Vegas Community. Many low income individuals in our city fall below the poverty level and are therefore prone to suffer from or be at risk of hunger and homelessness. Many households do not have the means to both keep up on their monthly financial obligation and feed their families. As a result, they may fall behind on their rent and other bills, eventually facing eviction and the loss of their permanent housing. Some individuals and families need emergency food assistance to recover from setbacks, but many rely on our emergency food pantry as a steady source of food over a long period of time. “Giving Grain Food Pantry” will provide nutritious food to low-middle income people in need, senior citizens, families, individuals, the homeless and all of the underserved in the Las Vegas Community. The target population for the project consists of individuals and families in the Las Vegas Community who are currently homeless or of low-moderate income (they have an income equal to or less than the low income limit established by HUD). These individuals and families are also marginally housed due to paying market rents or living above their means and are therefore at risk of homelessness. The population served by this project consists of individuals and families who need emergency food assistance and or short term financial assistance for rent, or utility payments. This is not a totally new project. Only the scale of services provided is larger. 2. Al-Maun Learning Center • Fajr al-Islam Learning Center (Fajr al-Islam) is the beginning of a "New Dawn" for our Muslim community. It is an education program under the administration and guidelines of Al-Maun (Neighborly Needs) Las Vegas, NV. Fajr al-Islam provides a new comprehensive approach to education for our youth. The curriculum includes high academic standards, vocational training and quality Islamic studies in an active and secure environment. Fajr al-Islam serves as a class setting for the Odyssey Charter School. Odyssey Charter School is a technology-based public school (K-12 grade), sponsored by the Clark County School District, and funded by the State of Nevada. Having received its ap-proved charter in 1999, Odyssey Charter School offers students and parents an alternative to the traditional setting for education. Students enrolled in Odyssey Charter School are individually assessed, tested and moni-tored by state-licensed teachers. This unique approach to education provides students with an individualized learning program designed to spe¬cifically address their strengths, needs and learn¬ing styles. Odyssey Charter School utilizes the Clark County School Districts Curriculum Essentials Framework and Course Syllabi as its’ curricu¬lum. The instructional on-line curriculum is corre¬lated and aligned to Nevada State standards and meets all state requirements. Odyssey Charter School is an ac¬credited school. Fajr al-Islam's objectives are: •To incorporate Islamic principles into the core curricula. •To utilize modern teaching strategies and methodologies. •To utilize computer technology to support learning in all major subjects. •To encourage the pursuit of knowledge through the individual’s aptitude and interest. •To provide guidance that leads to the highest moral standards and ethical behavior. •To teach additional languages. Islamic education programs: •Arabic language and grammar •Islamic history •Adab Professional participation is needed to ensure that the children are exposed to a broad range of technical and voca¬tional professions. We invite all professionals in our com-munity to participate in the extended education programs. • Al-Maun (Neighborly Needs) Learning Center of Las Vegas, NV began its first free General Educational Development (GED) classes on the “Historical Westside” of Las Vegas, NV in 2007. Nevada residents without a diploma or General Education Development (GED) credential are at a disadvantage in the growing competitive job market. In order to continue higher education, the GED is necessary. The GED adult classes help to prepare our clients for the GED testing. The GED tests are designed to measure the skill and concepts generally associated with high school instruction. The GED tests provide an opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma. To be eligibility for the GED classes an applicant must have proper identification and be at least 18 years of age. Individuals 17 years of age can attend the classes if he/she provides an age waiver signed by a parent and is not currently enrolled in school. • Al-Maun Computer Lab and Lending Library are new programs implemented by Al-Maun in 2014. These programs provide additional assistance to the community at large. The Digital Divide is real and pernicious, and the financial have-nots are this generation’s informational have-nots. For this reason alone it is essential that access to powerful information technologies is provided in every classroom, library, and other places where people from all socio-economic backgrounds gather. All children have the ability to become technologically literate, however in the context of the overall racial digital divide, a low-income European-American child is three times more likely to have internet access than his or her African-American counterpart, and four times as likely as a Latino family in the same socio-economic category. While African-Americans and Latinos represent about 1 in 5 American households, they represent only about 1 in 10 “netizens,” or households that are on-line and using the internet. This project targets students from low-income families who have no computers at home. Many of these students will lack the technical training required to academically compete at the high school and university level. Al-Maun’s objective is to insure that these students, their parents and the surrounding community will receive a basic understanding of information technology to assist in improving their grades in school and to provide books necessary to supplement and enhance the reading skills taught in the public school system. Our computer lab and lending library serves as an extension to the current educational programs. It is available for students to increase basic skills in English, mathematics, history, social studies, the sciences, and keyboarding. In addition, to further solidify the student’s technical skills we also offer the Khan Academy coding courses. This familiarization and training is of paramount importance as there are no longer any careers that do not use this technology extensively. There are no high schools or universities that will not expect that a competent student have extensive computer and social networking skills. By the time these young people face graduation and their college careers or the job market this situation will be even more acute. The parents are also able to use the computer lab and lending library to aid their children with homework and have the opportunity to maximize their own skills. It provides literacy help for the surrounding community. Al-Maun’s mission and philosophy is to promote the equitable access of quality education for minority students. We encourage parental participation, systemic changes on the part of the educational institutions, and equipping youth with the knowledge and skills to make changes themselves. The Lending Library has to date over 600 books on many topics available for the community to come and experience. Along with the computers that are available, the books provide an opportunity to the parents and the youth to come and explore their possibilities and enhance their growth potential. 3.
