Mission Statement
Neighbor Ride’s mission is to enhance the health and quality of life for Howard County’s seniors by providing affordable, volunteer-based supplemental transportation. The program’s development was prompted by a 2001 Office on Aging study identifying transportation as the greatest unmet need facing the county’s rapidly growing senior population. The Office presented its findings to Transportation Advocates, urging members to find a solution. Neighbor Ride’s model was developed over 3 years, borrowing best practices from programs across the country and matching them to local needs and resources. Today, a team of over 400 volunteers coordinate and provide 1,500 trips/month for seniors.
About This Cause
Neighbor Ride decreases isolation and improves the quality of life for Howard County seniors by providing door-to-door transportation for health care appointments, faith-based services, social outings, fitness activities, classes, volunteer and work obligations, shopping and other day-to-day needs. Services are available to county residents, age 60 and over, regardless of ability to pay. Eighteen volunteer Ride Coordinators handle intake and scheduling functions; and 400 volunteer Drivers use their personal vehicles to provide transportation to destinations in Howard County and surrounding jurisdictions. Door-to-door rides are available daytimes and evenings, 7 days/week. By providing for the transportation needs of seniors, Neighbor Ride removes a key barrier to health care and preventive services; and ensures the continued well-being and dignity of the elderly - enabling them to remain active, independent, and connected to the community. Initially in response to the COVID-19 crisis, Neighbor Ride now also serves vulnerable individuals and families in our community by delivering food and durable medical equipment in partnership with the Howard County Food Bank and the Loan Closet of Howard County. To date, our volunteers have delivered hundreds of pieces of medical equipment, 33,600 frozen meals, and over 116,000 pounds of food.
