ALEXANDER LEIGH CENTER FOR AUTISM

Mission Statement

Alexander Leigh Center for Autism (ALCA) was founded in 2004 by Dorie Hoevel and Kelly Weaver at a kitchen table over Chinese food. After two years of research and completing the necessary paperwork to form a nonprofit, they established a nonprofit clinic/therapeutic school originally operated out of Kelly’s home. Together, they created a place where children with autism reach their full individual potential, in a caring and safe environment. Kelly Weaver is the Executive Director. The student population comes from local public school districts when the student requires a more intensive placement to meet their needs. Children, 3-21 years old with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), OHI, multiple disabilities, developmental delay and/or intellectual disability, coming to ALCA typically require one-to-one support and customized intensive therapies to make measurable gains. Currently, there are 45 students being served on a year-round basis; growing to serve 65.

About This Cause

The goal of ALCA is to teach our students the skills necessary to achieve functional independence. We provide an environment where children on the autism spectrum can develop their potential academically, emotionally, socially, communicatively, and physically. It is our belief that addressing these characteristics through a child-centered team approach following a therapeutic, holistic, interdisciplinary model – with emphasis on generalization of skills to home and the community – provides the best practice for success.
