Mission Statement

Issue One is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to reducing the influence of money in politics and putting Americans of all stripes back in control of our democracy. We are generating a bigger, bolder movement for reform by recruiting new constituencies to the fight and elevating money in politics as the core civic issue of our time.

About This Cause

Issue One was created in 2014 by a merger of Fund for the Republic and Americans for Campaign Reform. We are fighting to restore a democracy where the best people to run for office, where all voices matter and where the best ideas are enacted into law. Specifically, we are changing the dynamic by: 1. Educating, marketing and popularizing the cause. Reforming money in politics is an essential all-American issue, one that we should all care about. To that end, we are: • Creating and deploying new messaging and marketing insights; • Launching communications efforts to help people of all political persuasions get educated and stay informed; • Propping up new efforts to broaden the reform movement beyond its core constituencies; • Increasing awareness about existing solutions and new opportunities to enact them. 2. Building a community of donors and leaders. We must bring new energy, fresh faces and additional resources to this fight. To that end, we are: • Rebranding money in politics as an essential all-American cause by recruiting influential people from all walks of life to actively support reform efforts; • Partnering with a wide range of organizations and affinity groups to educate new audiences and enlist new allies; • Providing points of engagment so philanthropists can get directly involved in the most promising efforts. 3. Investing and filling gaps in the field. We bring the strategic acumen of seasoned philanthropists to bear as we constantly evaluate the sector and identify potential areas for growth and grantmaking. To that end, we are: • Advancing the Victory 2021 plan, a sector-wide blueprint designed to guide reformers and donors toward collaborative funding and coordinated efforts; • Supporting the sector’s best work with direct grant making through our Issue One Fund; • Identifying capacity gaps where they persist and filling them with our own programs and initiatives.
